Quantum uncertainty field diagram

Visualization of a quantum uncertainty field tethered to the Enterprise

A quantum uncertainty field or improbability field was a phenomenon in which the rapid and random collapse of quantum uncertainties altered reality with its area of effect.

In 2259, the crew of the USS Enterprise accidentally dislodged a quantum uncertainty field from a subspace fold by transmitting a song into it that created a resonant frequency. This field resulted in a region of space within which all individuals were forced to sing and dance during moments of heightened emotion, as though they were in a musical. The field was tethered to the Enterprise and began to propagate across the subspace relay network, affecting multiple starships in the Federation and the Klingon Empire.

The Enterprise crew initially attempted to close the field by connecting shield harmonics and the Heisenberg compensator to the main deflector and firing a beam into the fold, without success. Ensign Nyota Uhura then discovered that whenever someone sang, there was a spike in the quantum improbability of the field. She deduced that having the entire crew sing in unison would produce a spike of sufficient magnitude to shatter the field and return space to normal. (SNW: "Subspace Rhapsody")
