Protein nibs were a type of food supplement available at remote Starfleet facilities.
In 2258, Montgomery Scott was angry at the fact that he had been stationed at the Delta Vega outpost for six months and was forced to eat protein nibs. He told James T. Kirk and an alternate Spock that he wanted "real food" instead. (Star Trek)
