The Podiceps auritius was a species of aquatic bird native to Earth.
When Spock tried to match the sound of the Whale Probe to the sound of an Earth animal aboard the Klingon Bird-of-Prey HMS Bounty, a Podiceps auritus was one of the animal names that appeared, paired with a partial image of a Humpback whale. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
