Alternate reality

"There's no relative direction in the vastness of space. There's only yourself, your ship, your crew. It's easier than you think to get lost."
Paris to James T. Kirk, 2263 (Star Trek Beyond)

In the alternate reality, Commodore Paris was a 23rd-century Human Federation Starfleet flag officer.

By 2263, Paris had become the commanding officer of Yorktown, the newest and most advanced starbase the Federation had built to date.

That year, Starfleet Command had sent Captain James T. Kirk's application for a vice admiral position at Yorktown to Paris for consideration, and requested that Commander Spock take command of the USS Enterprise in his stead.

Paris and Kirk later met an alien female named "Kalara" aboard Yorktown, whose escape pod drifted out of the nearby Necro Cloud and claimed that her ship and crew were stranded on a planet called Altamid in the nebula. Kirk volunteered the Enterprise to go into the nebula to rescue any survivors.

In the aftermath of a subsequent attack on Yorktown committed by Krall, Paris closed the Starfleet files on the USS Franklin and its crew. Paris commended Kirk for his actions in light of which the promotion to vice admiral was his if he so wished. When asked, she confirmed to Kirk that admirals didn't get to command starships, prompting Kirk to decline a promotion in favor of captaining the new USS Enterprise-A instead. (Star Trek Beyond)

Appendices[]

Background information[]

Commodore Paris was played by actress Shohreh Aghdashloo.

Despite being verbally identified as a commodore, her uniform shows the rank stripes of an admiral.

This character was added to Star Trek Beyond late in its development, with Aghdashloo's scenes being filmed in reshoots. She was first announced to be in Star Trek Beyond on 11 March 2016 (for comparison, the film's release date was 22 July 2016). However, the character was initially referred to as "the High Command of the Federation" in early news reports. [1]

Simon Pegg confirmed that Commodore Paris is a nod to Tom Paris and is probably the alternate-reality counterpart of his grandmother. [2]

Apocrypha[]

She appears in issue 10 of the comics series Star Trek: Boldly Go, in which she welcomes the Teenaxi Delegation to Yorktown.
