Old West Planet was one of the holopod simulations presented by Shari yn Yem during the drills she conducted aboard the USS Cerritos in 2381. According to Yem, the simulation was based on the experiences of various other Starfleet crews.
Ensign Beckett Mariner, upon starting the simulation, attempted to enter the local saloon, but was blocked from doing so and had points reducted. She then mounted a horse as intended by the program, only for the animal to buck her off and trample her to death, ending the program in failure.
Unknown to the crew, Yem had tampered with the holoprogram so that the entire crew would fail. The horses themselves were not rigged, however, as she "ran out of time", and Yem quipped that that particular failure was Mariner's alone. (LD: "I, Excretus")
This simulation is likely inspired by the events of TOS: "Spectre of the Gun". The simulation's red sky matches that of the Melkotian planet.
