Background information[]
The authors of the Star Trek Encyclopedia, 4th ed., vol. 2, p. 92 expressed their hope that the NX-class starships would continue a tradition of being named after the space shuttle orbiters. Going by this logic, the NX-03 would have been named "Challenger".
Apocrypha[]
The Star Trek: Enterprise novels Kobayashi Maru and Beneath the Raptor's Wing depict the manufacture of this ship, which is given the name "Challenger". The vessel launches in August, 2155, alongside Discovery NX-04, but is destroyed the next year, when Captain Roy Dunsel (β) activates the ship's self destruct, the first one installed aboard a United Earth starship, to destroy a Romulan warbird before it can attack Andoria.
In Star Trek Online, when purchasing an NX-class replica, the template gives it the designation "NX-03 Challenger".
According to Star Trek: Federation - The First 150 Years, this ship was the Excalibur, commanded by Bran Stiles.
