The goal of this project is to find out which Star Trek episodes and films really contain specific dates (of the Gregorian calendar variety) or can otherwise be tied to a specific date without resorting to any speculation, like the assumed correspondence of one thousand stardate units to one Earth year, or the unconfirmed idea that stardate XX000.0 corresponds to 1 January.

Fact list[]

  • Each fact stated in the following list needs to cite which episode or film it is from.
  • Relevant dialogue should be quoted exactly.
  • Only enter facts, not speculation.
  • No discussion in the list – for discussion, use the sections below this one. Facts without discussion or where all disagreements have been resolved may be transferred from the sections below to this list so long as they include the date in which the episode or film is set to an accuracy of at least one calendar year.
  • The columns of this table are as follows:
    • Title: the name of the episode or film
    • Stardate: the full stardate or range of stardates given in the episode or film
    • Date: as much of the date of the episode that is known, given in "YYYY-MM-DD" format
    • Reasoning: an explanation of how we know when this episode or film is set; can include quotes, descriptions of visual material, and references to the placement of other episodes or films
    • Notes: additional relevant facts
Title Stardate Date Reasoning Notes
TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever" 1930
  • There are various lines of dialogue throughout this episode indicating that the past scenes are set in 1930, for example, when Spock says, "I read a 1930 newspaper article. . . . Edith Keeler will die this year. I saw her obituary."
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home 1986
TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before" 1312.4–1313.8 2265
  • In this episode, James T. Kirk said that, "From directly ahead, we're picking up a recorded distress signal, the call letters of a vessel which has been missing for over two centuries [the SS Valiant]."
  • An okudagram from ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly" provides the launch/loss date of the Valiant as 2065. Given that Kirk says the Valiant has been missing for over two hundred years, this episode must take place no earlier than 2265.
  • Furthermore, in TOS: "The Deadly Years" (2267), Spock asked Hikaru Sulu, "How long have you served with Captain Kirk?" Sulu responded, "Two years, sir." Therefore, "Where No Man Has Gone Before" must be set in 2265.
  • The stardates are from Kirk's log entries.
TOS: "Balance of Terror" 1709.2–1709.6 2266
  • SNW: "A Quality of Mercy" depicts events from this episode in an alternate timeline, in which we learn (through Christopher Pike) that said events occur in "2266." Therefore, this episode must be set in that year.
  • The stardates are from Kirk's log entries.
TOS: "A Taste of Armageddon" 3192.1–3193.0 2267
  • In this episode, Spock said that, "When first contacted more than fifty years ago, Eminiar VII was at war with its nearest neighbor."
  • An okudagram from ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly" provides the contact date as 2217. Therefore, this episode must take place no earlier than 2267. Because its stardate places it before TOS: "The Deadly Years" (2267), this episode must also be set no later than 2267. Therefore, it must be set in 2267.
  • The first stardate is from Captain Kirk's log entry, while the second is from Lieutenant Commander Scott's.
TOS: "The Devil in the Dark" 3196.1 2267
TOS: "Errand of Mercy" 3198.4–3201.7 2267
TOS: "The Gamesters of Triskelion" 3211.7–3259.2 2267
TOS: "Metamorphosis" 3219.8–3220.3 2267 According to McCoy, "Zefram Cochrane died a hundred and fifty years ago." (An additional four references to a 150-year period were made.) According to Cochrane, "I was eighty-seven years old when I came here." An okudagram from ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly" established both that Cochrane was born in 2030 and was eighty-seven in 2117. This further supports a date of 2267 for this episode.
TOS: "Operation -- Annihilate!" 3287.2–3289.8 2267
TOS: "Amok Time" 3372.7 2267
TOS: "This Side of Paradise" 3417.3–3417.7 2267
TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?" 3468.1 2267
TOS: "The Deadly Years" 3478.2–3579.4 2267
  • This episode's year comes from an okudagram seen in VOY: "Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy".
  • The stardates are from Kirk's log entries.
  • In this episode, Kirk states, "I'm thirty four years old." An okudagram from ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly" provides Kirk's birthdate as 22 March 2233.
  • Therefore, this episode must take place between 22 March and 31 December 2267.
TOS: "Friday's Child" 3497.2–3499.1 2267
  • Since "The Deadly Years" is set between 22 March and 31 December 2267 and "The Doomsday Machine" is set after "The Deadly Years" but still in 2267, all episodes with stardates between them must be set between 22 March and 31 December 2267 as well.
TOS: "The Changeling" 3541.9 2267
TOS: "Wolf in the Fold" 3614.9–3615.4 2267

DS9: "Past Tense, Part II" 2371
  • The plot of this episode is a continuation of "Past Tense, Part I", which it must, therefore, directly follow.
  • Furthermore, based on the stardate given in Past Tense, Part I, this episode is set before DS9: "Life Support".
  • Since both of those episodes are set in 2371, this episode must be as well.
DS9: "Life Support" 48498.4 2371
  • In VOY: "Future's End", Henry Starling states that Voyager was launched in 2371. Since VOY: "The 37's" is set in 2371, all episodes with stardates between 48315.6 ("Caretaker") and 48975.1 ("The 37's") must also be set in 2371.

  • The stardate is from Janeway's log entry.
VOY: "Unimatrix Zero" 2377
VOY: "Unimatrix Zero, Part II" 54014.4 2377
VOY: "Homestead" 54868.6 2378-04-05

  • The date of Human–Vulcan First Contact was given in Star Trek: First Contact as 5 April 2063.
  • The stardate is from Janeway's log entry.
VOY: "Renaissance Man" 54890.7–54912.4 2378
  • Since this episode's stardates place it between VOY: "Homestead" and VOY: "Endgame", it must be set between 5 April 2378 and 31 December 2378.
VOY: "Endgame" 54973.4 2378
  • According to a commemorative plaque(X) seen in PIC: "The Star Gazer", Voyager returned home in 2378, an event depicted in this episode.
  • Furthermore, this episode must take place after "Homestead", which takes place on 5 April 2378.
  • Seven of Nine asked, "Do you remember three months ago, when my cortical node shut down?", referring to the events of VOY: "Human Error".
  • The stardate is from Janeway's log entry.

Strange New Worlds[]

2259

Because stardates in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are often in the same range as those from Star Trek: The Original Series, they are kept separately in this section to avoid confusion.

  • TAS: "The Magicks of Megas-Tu" (1254.4): This episode's stardate would seem to place it in 2265, as it would put it before TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (1312.4–1313.8; 2265). However, it features Dr. McCoy, who did not become ship's surgeon until after "Where No Man Has Gone Before". It also features sets as they are in the rest of Star Trek: The Animated Series and similar to the standard ones of Star Trek: The Original Series as opposed to the considerably different sets of the second pilot. This holds for the uniforms. Finally, the stardate is an outlier for The Animated Series, which mainly uses four-digit stardates beginning with a four or a five, and is season 2 a six or seven. This fits with the series' placement after The Original Series.

2285
  • Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (8130.3–8141.6)
    • This film must be set on the 22 March as it is set on Kirk's birthday.
    • At two points in the film, it is implied that we are fifteen years after TOS: "Space Seed":
      1. Khan: ". . . marooned here fifteen years ago by Captain James T. Kirk."
      2. Kirk: "There's a man out there I haven't seen in fifteen years who's trying to kill me."
    • "Space Seed" is set in 2266 or 2267. Therefore, this film would seem to be set in 2281, 2282, or 2283.
    • The label on the bottle of Romulan ale that McCoy gives to Kirk as a birthday gift reads 2283. When Kirk reads the year on the label, McCoy responds, "Yeah, well, it takes this stuff a while to ferment." This establishes the earliest possible date for the film as 2284, contradicting our previously established latest date of 2283.
    • In Star Trek Generations, in the Nexus, Kirk at one point imagines himself nine years into the past to the day he told Antonia he was returning to Starfleet. This must have occurred before this film, as he is supervising command-track cadets at Starfleet Academy as an active Starfleet admiral at this film's start. Furthermore, Kirk entered the Nexus in either 2292 or 2293. This means that he returned to Starfleet in 2282, 2283, or 2284.
    • According to a commemorative plaque(X) for the Reliant which appeared in PIC: "The Star Gazer", The Wrath of Khan was set in 2285.
    • All and all, this film seems to be set on 22 March 2281, 2282, 2283, 2284, or 2285. A later year of 2284 or 2285 has the most direct evidence, and 2285 has the most direct evidence of all. Therefore, 22 March 2285 seems, for the purposes of Memory Alpha, the more accurate date.
  • Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (8210.3):
  • Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (8390):
    • Kirk states in his Captain's log near the opening of the film that he and his crew are in "our third month of our Vulcan exile," following the final events of The Search for Spock, which takes place in early 2285. Thus, the 23rd century portions of this film must take place around the middle of 2285.
    • Upon traveling to the 23rd century, Gillian mentions that she has "three hundred years of catch-up learning to do," though this seems to have been a casual approximation the time difference. The same is true for Kirk's reference to the HMS Bounty mutiny, which took place in 1789, having occurred five hundred years ago (from his own time).
  • Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (8454.1):
    • Within this film, there are several references indicating that it takes place within three weeks of the previous film, which would put it in mid-to-late 2285.
    • There are several other factors that may seem to suggest other dates for this film. However, they are based on speculation, such as the assumption that the colony on Nimbus III was established by the Treaty of Organia. Without any solid evidence for this and other points, this film must be set in 2285.

09xxx[]

2292 / 2293
  • Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (9521.6–9529.1):
    • Leonard McCoy says, "For twenty-seven years I have been ship's surgeon aboard the USS Enterprise." If McCoy was only referring to his service aboard the USS Enterprise-A, this film would be set no earlier than 2312, as the Enterprise-A was launched at the end of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (8390; 2285). However, the first scene of Star Trek Generations, which takes place after this film, is set in either 2292 or 2293. Therefore, McCoy must be referring to the sum of his service on the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) and the Enterprise-A.
    • Since McCoy had joined by 2266 per TOS: "Balance of Terror" and had not by the start of the mission in 2265 per "Where No Man Has Gone Before", he must have joined in either 2265 or 2266. This means that The Undiscovered Country can be set no earlier than 2292. No upper limit can be found using this method, as McCoy could be using the twenty-seven year figure as a duration rather than a difference.
    • However, since The Undiscovered Country is set before the opening scene in Generations, which, as mentioned above, is set in 2292 or 2293, this gives 2293 as the latest this film could be set, meaning that it is set in either 2292 or 2293.

  • TNG: "Sarek" (43917.4–43920.7): Captain Picard established that Sarek was roughly "two hundred and two years old." In TOS: "Journey to Babel" (3842.3–3843.4; between 22 March and 31 December 2267), Dr. McCoy said of Sarek: "After all, you're only a hundred and two." Sarek corrected him, "102.437 precisely, Doctor, measured in your years." Therefore, these episodes are at least 99.563 years apart and at most 100.563 years apart. Therefore, the earliest this episode could possibly be set is ~2366.782, and the latest is ~2368.563. However, since this episode's stardate is before that of TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds" (43989.1–43998.5; 2366 or 2367), it can be set no later than 2367, meaning that it could be set anywhere from ~2366.782 to 31 December 2367.
  • Since both TNG: "Sarek" and TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds" are set in 2366 or 2367, it stands to reason that all episodes that are placed between these two by their stardates must be set in the same range.
  • TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds" (43989.1–43998.5): J.P. Hanson said "We've known they were coming for over a year", referring to the Borg. In common language, this time span would be between a year and eighteen months. The first contact with the Borg was in TNG: "Q Who" (42761.9; 2365). Therefore, this episode must take place in either 2366 or 2367.

  • DS9: "Call to Arms" (50975.2): This episode is set five years after DS9: "Emissary" (46379.1–46393.1; 2370), which was when Benjamin Sisko took command of Deep Space 9. In this episode, Sisko says, "When I first took command of this post, all I wanted was to be somewhere else, anywhere but here. But now, five years later, this has become my home and you have become my family." Therefore, this episode must be set in 2374, 2375, or 2376. However, this episode's stardate places it before VOY: "Scorpion" (50984.3; 2374 or 2375). Therefore, this episode must be set in one of those years.
  • VOY: "Scorpion" (50984.3): In the episode "The Gift" (51008–51030), The Doctor states that Kes was in contact with Species 8472 "a few days ago," as depicted in VOY: "Scorpion". Since "The Gift" is set in either 2374 or 2375 and no earlier than fifty-six days, seventeen hours into 2374, this episode must also be set in either 2374 or 2375.

51xxx[]

2374 / 2375
  • VOY: "Scorpion, Part II" (51003.7): This episode's stardate places it between two episodes that are either set in 2374 or 2375. Therefore, this episode must be set in either 2374 or 2375.
  • VOY: "The Gift" (51008–51030):
    • In the past scenes in VOY: "Fury", The Doctor is considering Schweitzer as a name for himself. Those scenes must therefore be set between "Eye of the Needle" (48579.4; 2371), when The Doctor first becomes interested in taking a name, and VOY: "Heroes and Demons" (48693.2–48710.5; 2371), when he takes on the name Schweitzer. Therefore, the past scenes in this episode must be set in 2371.
    • Furthermore, the computer states that Voyager has been in the Delta Quadrant for "fifty-six days, seventeen hours." In the past scenes, the future Kes says that her past self will leave Voyager in three years time, referring to the events of "The Gift". This places "The Gift" in either 2374 or 2375 and can be set no earlier than fifty-six days, seventeen hours into 2374.

  • VOY: "In the Flesh" (52136.4): Seven of Nine stated it had been over a year since they encountered Species 8472, which was in VOY: "Scorpion" (50984.3–51003.7). Since "Scorpion" was set in 2374 or 2375, this episode must be set no earlier than 2375. Furthermore, since its stardate places it before VOY: "Timeless" which is set in 2375 or 2376, this episode must also be set in that range.
  • VOY: "Timeless" (52143.6–52164.3): In this episode, Captain Janeway says, "Four years, two months, eleven days. That's precisely how long Voyager's been in the Delta Quadrant." Voyager entered the Delta Quadrant in 2371. Therefore, this episode must either be set in 2375 or 2376 depending on when in 2371 "Caretaker" is set.

  • Star Trek Generations (opening scene): The intertitle between this scene and the next reads "78 Years Later". Since the rest of the movie takes place in 2371 and the opening scene takes place seventy-eight years earlier, it must be set in either 2292 or 2293.
2371 / 2372
  • VOY: "Cold Fire": It is stated in an opening narration that the events of "Caretaker" (48315.6; 2371) occurred ten months ago. Therefore, this episode is either set in 2371 or 2372 depending on when in 2371 "Caretaker" is set.
2377 / 2378
  • VOY: "Human Error": In "Endgame", Seven of Nine refers to the events from this episode as having taken place three months in the past. Given that "Endgame" is set between 5 April 2378 and 31 December 2378, "Human Error" must take place between December 2377 and September 2378.
