Melanie Hathorn is the actress who appeared as a sciences officer in several episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. As a background actress she received no credit for her appearances but was identified by the call sheets for the episodes. On several call sheets she is also listed as Hawthorne. According to the call sheets, she filmed bridge scenes for the fourth season episode "Qpid", Ten Forward scenes for the fifth season episodes "New Ground", "The Outcast", and "Cost Of Living", scenes in the cargo bay for the episode "Ethics", and corridor scenes for the episode "The Perfect Mate" but these were not part of the final episodes.

According to a makeup and hair continuity Polaroid she filmed a scene for the sixth season episode "Birthright, Part II" but was not part of the final episode.

Besides her work on Star Trek, Hathorn was a stand-in on Pentathlon (1994, with David Soul, Daniel Riordan, Barry Lynch, Buddy Joe Hooker, Bobby Bass, Kristopher Logan, Lena Banks, and Johnny Martin) and appeared as Amy in the horror film Lukas' Child (1993, with Phil O'Dell).
