The Lesser Magellanic Cloud was a stellar region.
The USS Leondegrance, commanded by Captain Nyota Uhura, carried out a five-year mission to the region from 2301 to 2305, making first contact with more than one hundred civilizations within. (PIC: "The Star Gazer" commemorative placard)
This may be a reference to the Small Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy to the Milky Way. The Small Magellanic Cloud is over 200,000 light years away, well beyond the galactic rim. Having Uhura's vessel go there, however, would contradict "The Galactic Barrier" that suggests no Starfleet vessel had conducted major exploration beyond the galaxy prior to the third millennium.
