A laser fusion initiator was a subsystem of Cardassian fusion reactors which provided the energy input needed to bootstrap their laser-induced fusion reaction processes.
According to Gul Dukat in 2371, Deep Space 9's reactor could be shut down by disabling the initiator. (DS9: "Civil Defense")
