Alternate reality
The kill zone was an area around a deadly location in which those remaining would be killed.
In 2259 of the alternate reality, James T. Kirk informed Spock, Hikaru Sulu and Nyota Uhura that the Nibirans were out of the kill zone of the volcano and Spock could proceed with his plan to neutralize it. (Star Trek Into Darkness)
