Joe Aubel was an art director on Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Aubel worked primarily in television. He was the art director for such TV movies as Maneaters Are Loose! (starring Diana Muldaur), The Fantastic Seven (starring Christopher Lloyd), Valentine Magic on Love Island (starring Adrienne Barbeau), Rage! (featuring Jonathan Banks, Darleen Carr, Lois Hall, Bill Quinn, David Soul, Victor Tayback, Garry Walberg, Nicholas Worth, and Meg Wyllie), and Carly's Web (featuring Daphne Ashbrook, K Callan, and Gregory Itzin). He was also an art director on Remington Steele.

In addition, Aubel was an art director on the 1981 horror film Dead & Buried, an art director and production designer on The Milagro Beanfield War (1988), and production designer on American Me (1992). His other production design credits included The Cisco Kid (1994, starring Ron Perlman) and the television series Thirtysomething, Ellen, and 7th Heaven (starring Stephen Collins and Catherine Hicks).
