Major Kira Nerys recommended him to Captain Sisko in 2372 as her replacement when Kira was thinking of resigning her post as liaison officer of Deep Space 9 to follow her D'jarra. Kira told Sisko that she thought "he'd make an excellent First Officer," but if he and Sisko didn't "hit it off" she could think of "a few other people."(DS9: "Accession")
