An invertebrate was an animal lacking a vertebral column (or spine). The group included all animals except fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals.

As an exozoologist, Edward M. La Forge studied invertebrates in the Modean system. This was one of the assignments Geordi La Forge recalled accompanying when describing his upbringing to Sutter in 2368. (TNG: "Imaginary Friend")

During their attempts to teach an infant Changeling how to shapeshift in 2373, Doctor Mora suggested that he and Odo expose the Changeling to simple lifeforms such as algae, fungi, and then invertebrates. (DS9: "The Begotten")
