To be honorary was to be declared to belong to a group of individuals through means other than those by which one usually acquired the status. Honorary status could be granted in relation to a rank, military organization, or a state/planet's citizenship.

In 2164 General Thy'lek Shran made Jonathan Archer an honorary member of the Andorian Imperial Guard. (ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II")

In 2269, the Mendant of Terra 10 declared the crew of the USS Enterprise honorary Terratins for always. Spock then remarked to James T. Kirk that they came close to being more than honorary (being shrunk by the spiroid epsilon waves to the same size as the Terratins), to which Kirk agreed, suggesting a sixteenth of an inch was the difference between them. (TAS: "The Terratin Incident")

In 2364, Commander William T. Riker, upon meeting Data for the first time, asked the android if his rank of Lieutenant commander was honorary. Data assured the commander that he'd earned his rank, the same as any other officer in the fleet. (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint")

In 2376, after Reginald Barclay made successful contact with USS Voyager via the efforts of the Pathfinder Project, Tom Paris toasted him and declared him an honorary crewmember of Voyager. (VOY: "Pathfinder")
