Grenade launcher, 2267

James Kirk loading a grenade into a grenade launcher

A grenade was a small self-contained weapon with a built-in time delay that might be thrown or launched. Grenades varied according to the payload, which might contain an explosive, incendiary, gas, or electronic components designed to stun, damage, or kill. (TOS: "Arena"; ENT: "Countdown") A type of grenade used during the 23rd century could be launched with a grenade launcher, to attack an enemy hiding in a defensive position and out of direct line-of-sight. (TOS: "Arena")

Because of a moderate to large area of effect, grenades did not require precise aim, making them particularly useful for targets that were out of sight. Grenades also had the ability to neutralize multiple targets simultaneously, making them valuable as the start of a surprise attack. (ENT: "Shockwave")

In an alternate 1944, a grenade was thrown by Carmine at a group of German Nazi soldiers outside Vosk's compound, causing the grenade to detonate. (ENT: "Storm Front, Part II")

Grenade-like device about to be triggered

In 2372, a device functioning as a grenade was used in the liberation of a group of Trabe from a Kazon-Pommar prison on Sobras. The ball-like object was thrown to a prison guard, and exploded when the guard tried to kick it. (VOY: "Alliances")
