Lieutenant Gabler was a male Human Starfleet officer who lived during the mid-23rd century. He served in the operations division aboard the USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk, during a historic five-year mission that starship undertook. He served as one of Montgomery Scott's best engineers, who also doubled as a security officer.
In 2269, when Scott and Kirk carried a force field box, containing an antimatter villus from the "digestive system" of an unidentified cosmic cloud, into the nacelle of the Enterprise, Gabler assisted Scott remotely, by opening and closing the doors to an area at the rear of the nacelle where the antimatter was placed. He was in engineering when Kirk called, expecting Scotty, and ordered him to raise the deflector shields, but he couldn't as the Vendorian posing as Carter Winston had disabled them. (TAS: "The Survivor")
When Scott asked him why the bridge was experiencing zero gravity, he believed the problem was in the gravity control computer, but was unable to access it because the computer bay hatch was jammed. (TAS: "Once Upon a Planet")
He reported from the maintenance hatch to the main circuitry room that the engineering tools were too big to use. After he became miniaturized, he assisted Scotty in rigging the transporter to beam Kirk down to Terra 10, before returning to the bridge, where he endured the loud voice of the regular sized Kirk. He too was eventually beamed to the planet, but was returned upon the rescue of the Terratins. (TAS: "The Terratin Incident")
He and Bell, while acting as the relief guard for the dilithium vault, found two Klingons "poking around." When he brought the matter to James T. Kirk's attention, they claimed to be lost. After Spock offered to show the Klingons the way, Kirk told both officers to remain at their post until they were relieved. (TAS: "The Time Trap")

The first draft script for "The Terratin Incident" calls him Burnside.
Alan Dean Foster gave him the first name "Frank" in written dialogue of his short-story adaptation of "Once Upon a Planet", as published in Star Trek Log 3. Gabler is briefly mentioned by name in the novelization of "The Magicks of Megas-Tu" (also published in Star Trek Log 3) – when Scotty orders him and an officer named Jacobs to do some work, following the Enterprise's encounter with a matter-energy whirlwind – but Gabler is neither referred to nor appears in that actual episode.
