Finibus III was located at coordinates 2721.4386. It orbited a black hole and was approximately two hundred million kilometers distant from a brown dwarf in the system. The brown dwarf emitted radio wave interference that could potentially hamper communications in the area.
The planet had a rotation period of 23.5 hours and a revolution period of 346.5 solar days. Its mass was estimated to be 4.93532×1024 kilograms and its age at 4.7 billion solar years. The atmosphere was composed of 77% molecular nitrogen, 21% molecular oxygen, 1.2% carbon dioxide, and 0.8% nitrous oxide, with trace amounts of methane and neon. History[]
In 2259, the atmosphere of Finibus III was in danger of becoming unbreathable. Thus, the USS Enterprise was dispatched to deliver an upgraded AP 350 atmospheric processor to the colony there. However, they arrived to find that the colony had been recently devastated by suborbital plasma bombardment, and its communications satellite destroyed. No colonists remained on the surface, alive or dead; streaks of blood on the ground indicated that casualties had been dragged to a central location before being removed.
Meanwhile, the Enterprise found a Federation cargo vessel containing approximately a hundred survivors. From eyewitness accounts, Lieutenant La'an Noonien-Singh surmised that the attack had been perpetrated by the Gorn, and that they had deliberately left the survivors as bait for any rescuers. Shortly after, the Enterprise was ambushed and heavily damaged by a Gorn hunter hiding near the second moon. Noonien-Singh later noted that the Gorn had never before ventured so far into Federation space. (SNW: "Memento Mori")
