Dooplercating

Dooplercating was a defense mechanism in which a Doopler involuntarily duplicated, usually due to a feeling of embarrassment.

The real drawback was the fact that the act of dooplercating itself was considered quite embarrassing, and as a result, one Doopler would often continue to dooplercate itself again and again.

The only thing that could reverse the dooplercating was if the Doopler was to get angry, and then the clones would recombine until there was only one Doopler again.

A single dooplercating takes a couple of seconds and produces two individuals of seemingly the same size and volume as the original. The clothes and shoes of the original person are also duplicated in the process and appear on the clones.

The recombining process is similarly fast, and somehow the clothes and shoes from both individuals are reintegrated into the new one.

In 2381, the crew of the USS Cerritos was on Doopler duty, doing everything in their power not to say or do anything that might embarrass their Doopler guest, who was the emissary of the Federation. But surely enough, Captain Carol Freeman accidentally complained about him, not realizing he was on the bridge at the time, and he began dooplercating, overrunning the ship in a way that was similar to a tribble infestation. Furthermore, they weren't allowed to dock at Starbase 25 until they sorted the situation out. Before long they learned that making him angry caused him to recombine with his duplicates, and so they started using colorful insults and raising their voice at him.

Later, on the starbase, the senior officers of the Cerritos were disappointed to learn that that since they weren't officers of a capital ship, they weren't invited. Instead though, they decided to join Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler at an old bar that James T. Kirk and Spock visited during the 2260s. The Doopler emissary approached the captain and thanked her for getting him to recombine. He then asked her if she knew of any place where he might be able to relax and enjoy himself. She then called the transporter room on her ship and had him transported to the afterparty that they weren't invited to. Upon arrival, once he learned he hadn't been invited, he became embarrassed and began dooplercating at an exponential rate. (LD: "An Embarrassment Of Dooplers")
