A diplomatic function or diplomatic soirée was a diplomatic function used to interact with diplomats in an official or unofficial social setting.
Following the 2293 meet-and-greet between Captains James T. Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the USS Enterprise-A's senior staff with Klingon chancellor Gorkon and his senior staff, which included a tour of the starship, followed by dinner, Kirk later noted in his log to note to the galley that Romulan ale was no longer to be served at diplomatic functions.
