The name Defiant had a longstanding history as a ship name, starting as early as the 18th century and lasting at least into the 24th century.

The HMS Defiant was a noted sailing ship of the British Royal Navy from the 18th century. (ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II")

The USS Defiant (NCC-1764) was a Constitution-class starship of the 23rd century. (TOS: "The Tholian Web")

The USS Defiant (NX-74205) was the prototype starship of the Defiant-class, famous for its service under Benjamin Sisko in the Dominion War from 2370 until its destruction at the Second Battle of Chin'toka in 2375. (DS9: "The Search, Part I"; DS9: "The Changing Face of Evil")

The USS Defiant was another Defiant-class starship in service during 24th century. Originally named the USS Sao Paulo, it was recommissioned as the new Defiant in 2375 and remained in service until at least 2384.
