DMA controller

The first DMA controller

The DMA controller was a device created by Species 10-C that generated and controlled the Dark Matter Anomaly. Within the anomaly, it was located in a subspace rift containing high concentrations of galactic barrier particles, surrounded by a region of relative calm. The device was composed of a silicon-ellanium alloy, the same rare material also used to construct Species 10-C's Dyson rings and the housing of the hyperfield's power source. (DIS: "Rubicon", "Rosetta", "Coming Home")

After the DMA first manifested in 3190, the existence of a technological device at its heart was revealed when the anomaly unexpectedly vanished into it. The device also disappeared shortly after, leaving a temporary subspace rupture. Federation scientist Ruon Tarka conjectured that the controller contained a wormhole, allowing it and the DMA to jump across space. Tarka then proposed to create a miniature working model of the controller aboard USS Discovery. Though Captain Saru terminated the experiment when it threatened Discovery, enough data was gathered to verify Tarka's theory. (DIS: "The Examples")

Tarka determined that the controller would require an energy source equivalent to a hypergiant star to function. Coveting this power for his own purposes, Tarka designed what was effectively an isolytic weapon capable of generating a cascading subspace burst that could sever the controller from its power source, collapsing the DMA while protecting the power source within a null space pocket. Tarka advocated for the deployment of his weapon at the Multilateral DMA Strategy Assembly, but the delegates elected to pursue a diplomatic strategy instead. (DIS: "The Examples", "...But to Connect", "Rubicon")

Undeterred, Tarka enlisted the aid of Cleveland Booker to destroy the DMA themselves. Despite the best efforts of Discovery to stop them, Tarka managed to beam his weapon into the controller. The DMA was destroyed, but Tarka discovered that the controller had actually been powered remotely from Species 10-C's hyperfield outside the galaxy. (DIS: "Rubicon")

Species 10-C subsequently deployed a second DMA with another controller, which was the same size as the first but considerably more powerful. (DIS: "The Galactic Barrier")

After being convinced to dismantle the hyperfield and stop the DMA, the 10-C used the DMA controller's wormhole to return the USS Discovery to Earth before shutting the DMA down once and for all. (DIS: "Coming Home")
