"Special effects" (commonly abbreviated as "SFX") are processes used in the motion picture industry to visualize imaginary or illusory events, situations and/or objects for on-screen depiction. SFX are those effects that are created for live representation on the set during filming, often for actors to interact with in real time. The occasionally used expression "in-camera effects" reflects this circumstance. Typical SFX techniques include makeup, set construction, props for actors to interact with, on-set pyrotechnics as well as on-stage light effects. All Star Trek productions used SFX. An alternative qualifier, "Practicals", was introduced by Industrial Light & Magic around 2019. (Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian: "Practical")
