Candy was a type of food with a high sugar content and little nutritional value.

In 2366, observing the rapid pace at which nanites ate the USS Enterprise-D's linear memory crystals, William T. Riker compared the crystals to candy. (TNG: "Evolution")

Consuming too much candy could cause nausea and vomiting in young children. In 2371, Molly O'Brien became sick from eating candy given to her by Lwaxana Troi on their trip to Deep Space 9 and threw up on her father. (DS9: "Fascination")

In the first draft script of ENT: "Fusion" (which had the working title "Equilibrium"), Trip Tucker told Fraht about candy, as the latter had never heard of it before. Trip described it thus; "It's a treat… a confection with lots of sugar, sometimes mixed up with fruit or nuts." He also explained that acquiring free candy was the purpose of going trick or treating at Halloween. However, as Trip recalled, he and his brother had accidentally eaten too much candy, one Halloween during their childhood, and had therefore needed to have their stomachs pumped at a hospital.
