According to a section of the Picard family album prepared for Star Trek Generations but not seen on-screen, Appellation controlee was an Appellation certification awarded to French wines. An "Appellation Bordeaux contrôlée" specific to the Bordeaux region of France was also seen.
Before 2305, the Bordeaux wines of Chateau Picard were awarded the Appellation Bordeaux contrôlée. In that year, the vinery was awarded a "Certificate of Excellence in Winemaking" from the Terran Winemakers Association for the 2305 vintage of their Bordeaux. The certificate mentions the appellation.
