The Black Whale (B・W(ブラックホエール), Burakku Hoēru) is a class of large transport vessels built for the Kakin Empire's expedition to the New Continent. The first ship in the class, the "Black Whale 1", can carry 200,000 passengers and serves as the main grounds for Kakin's current succession contest.[1][2]

History[]

Dark Continent Expedition arc[]

King Nasubi declared that Kakin would build 20 Black Whales in one year, promising to send 100 million people to the "Dark Continent" within five years. Since the first ship's capacity is only 200,000, it can be estimated that the building rate of these ships or the capacity of later classes will increase considerably.[1]

Succession Contest arc[]

In front of a crowd of thousands, the Black Whale 1 begins its voyage to the New Continent.[3]

Description[]

The Black Whale 1 is 1,500 meters long, 800 meters tall, and 800 meters wide.[4]

The interior of the Black Whale is simple since it was specialized for transport, reducing the production time and costs.[1] Since the vessel is too massive to be tied up at a dock, airships and ferries are used to transport people and supplies to and from a seaport.[5]

The Black Whale 1 is the commemorative first ship of the Black Whale class, scheduled to set out on the first voyage to the New Continent. The ship carries many notable figures, including the Kakin royal family and members of the Hunter Association and V6 who will extend their journey further to the actual Dark Continent. Civilians were chosen by lottery, where the odds of landing a seat were 1 in 1,300.[1] The official voyage to the New Continent will last two months. In three weeks, the ship will leave humanity's normal navigational and fishing waters. The crew will then refuel, perform a final check of the vessel, and close the top dome before traveling for five weeks in uncharted waters where extreme weather phenomena and flying creatures are commonplace.[3]

The locations of various characters on the fourth day of voyage

The Black Whale 1's passengers are divided into five separate tiers (further subdivided into several decks) according to their wealth and social class: Tier 1 is for the royal family, V5 politicians, and industry dignitaries, Tier 2 for celebrities and the wealthy, while the lower three tiers are zoned for general passengers. The throughways dividing the tiers are guarded by the Royal Army since the entirety of the ship is under martial law. More specifically, the second and third tiers are separated by a thick bulkhead which can only be opened in emergencies from the second-tier side.[5] In order to move between the third and fifth tiers through the Central Passages ((ちゅう)(おう)(れん)(らく)(つう)()()()()(), Chūō Renraku Tsūro),[6] passengers need to buy tickets either from the Royal Army or the Mafia.[7]

At the start of the voyage, many crimes occurring in the lower tiers, such as ticket fraud, theft, racial conflicts, drunken brawls, identity theft, assault, and false reports, were higher than what the Zodiacs had initially anticipated.[5] Dealers at general stores on Tier 1 can order rare items for wealthy individuals that can be delivered to the Black Whale via large drones, cargo blimps, or high-speed boats. The deadline for ordering on the last air-shipment is the fourteenth day of the voyage, and the deadline via high-speed boat is three days before then. Depending on the wealth and connections of the customer, smaller items can be ordered past the final deadline.[8]

Passenger List[]

Black Whale 1 Passenger List
Tier Civilians Guards/Soldiers Doctors Overall Unlisted Passengers
1 17,670 800 930 20,000 Unknown
2 600
3 ≤179,398 600 ≥1 180,000 Unknown
4 ≥1 ≥250
5 0 ≥250
Σ ≤197,068 2,000 ≥932 200,000 ≥500

Tiers 1 and 2 accommodate roughly 20,000 passengers, while Tiers 3 through 5 contain the remaining 180,000.[6] Of the 20,000 in the upper tiers, 1,000 are doctors, 1,400 are guards and Royal Army soldiers. The remaining are members of the royal family, V5 politicians, industry dignitaries, celebrities, the wealthy,[5] Kakin Mafia bosses[9] and their staff[10] (the last two might not be official passengers).[7] The lower three tiers only have 600 guards and Royal Army soldiers, with Tiers 4 and 5 relying on the Mafia to maintain public order.[6] The majority of people there are general passengers who boarded the ship in the hope of making a fresh start on the New Continent.[1][11] Several unofficial passengers boarded the ship while avoiding registration on the Royal Army's passenger list.[7] At least 500 Mafia associates, including fringe members, are unofficial passengers listed on the Mafia member files.[6][12] On the other hand, all 23 members of the Heil-Ly Family boarded the ship as normal civilians.[12]

The number of medical clinics ended up being a fifth of what had been planned, and only 1/15 of the doctors boarded the ship. There are three clinics on Tier 3, two on Tier 4 and 5, and Tier 5 is without a dedicated doctor. Consequently, Cheadle was forced to hire more personnel and reorganize the staff.[5]

Mizaistom's proposal to the Kakin army

Mizaistom proposing to send 800 soldiers to the lower tiers

Since there are 2,000 guards and Royal Army soldiers among the 200,000 passengers, there should ideally be one guard for every 100 civilians. In reality, Tiers 1 and 2 have 70% of the total guards, while the lower tiers have one guard for every 300 civilians. In order to stop the murders occurring on Tier 3 and to remove the passengers' source of anxiety, Mizaistom proposed reorganizing the Royal Army and sending 800 soldiers from Tiers 1 and 2 to the lower tiers.[6]

Tier 1[]

Hunter × Hunter - v34 p167 - c359 - (SHU) (Digital CC) (PZG)

The first tier of the Black Whale 1

Tier 1 (1(そう), Is-sō) is a separate cruise ship situated in a large pool on top of the Black Whale vessel. It accommodates the royal family, V5 politicians, industry dignitaries,[5] and the bosses of Kakin's three largest Mafia families.[9][10] The residences of the Mafia bosses are in equivalent locations to those of the higher Queens, with their luggage allowances second only to the King's.[13]

Currently, there are 800 guards and Royal Army soldiers roaming the halls around its living quarters,[6] 150 of whom are Provisional Hunters with limited licenses for the voyage. The tier serves as the main "hunting ground" for Kakin's succession contest.[5]

King's Living Quarters[]

The King's Living Quarters ((おう)(きょ)(じゅう)()()()()()()(), Ō Kyojū-ku) is the residence of King Nasubi. It is separated from the Princes' living quarters by the banquet hall.[5] The most noticeable features of the living room are its patterned floors, ornate furniture, and various paintings hanging on the walls.[14]

Princes' Living Quarters[]

The Princes' Living Quarters ((おう)()(きょ)(じゅう)()()()()()(), Ōji Kyojū-ku) are a large area on Tier 1. Each of the fourteen princes uses one of fourteen identical rooms as their own living quarters. The fourteen rooms are arranged in two rows of seven rooms, with entrances opening outwards instead of to the entrances of other rooms. Assuming the banquet hall is north of the rooms, the even-numbered rooms are on the left, and the odd-numbered rooms are on the right, with the higher princes being closer to the banquet hall.[15]

The rooms do not share walls and have walkable corridors between adjacent rooms. The rooms are "back to back", and so the main doors to each quarter open away from the other rooms. The fourteen rooms are enclosed within another wall with fourteen entrances, one in front of each door to a Prince's living quarters. The main door to a living quarter opens to a short corridor leading to its living room. Yet another wall surrounds this outer wall and isolates the Princes' Living quarters from the rest of the deck, only accessible via an entrance opposite the banquet hall, guarded by soldiers from the Royal Army.[15]

Living Quarters[]

Each of a Prince's Living Quarters has the same layout. The Prince's Master Bedroom is at the back of the living quarters, with its own shower and washroom nearby. In front of it is a living space, which takes up most of the middle of a living quarter. Near the front, there is a kitchen and dining room for meals, and a servants' quarters for the Prince's servants to reside in. [15]

On the right side of the Princes' living quarters (the side with the odd-numbered princes), the VVIP Private Recreational Facilities (ブイビップ(おう)()(せん)(よう)()(らく)()(せつ)()(), Buibippu Ōji Sen'yō Goraku Shisetsu) are made available for the Princes, since they can only be accessed from the same entrance.[15]

VVIP Living Quarters[]

The VVIP Living Quarters (ブイビップ(きょ)(じゅう)()()()()()()()(), Buibippu Kyojū-ku) are separated from the banquet hall by the Princes' living quarters. One way to gain access to go through the corridor bordering the wall of the Princes' quarters, passing by the living quarters of soldiers and associates and the passageway to lower tiers.[15] It is the residence of the VIP outside of the royal family who reside on Tier 1 (including V5 politicians, industry dignitaries, and the bosses of Kakin's three largest Mafia families).[5]

Princes Benjamin and Camilla are currently confined to this area after Cleapatro's decision at their hearing.[16]

Soldiers/Associates' Living Quarters[]

The Soldiers/Associates' Living Quarters ((へい)()()()()()()()()()(じゅん)(かい)(いん)(せい)(かつ)()()()()(), Heishi/Junkaiin Seikatsu-ku) are designated for the Kakin soldiers and about 150[5] Provisional Hunters who passed the 289th Hunter Exam with limited licenses only for the voyage. They can be reached from the left side of the Princes' living quarters which is heavily guarded by soldiers. Following these quarters is a passageway that leads to the lower tiers.[15]

Banquet Hall[]

The Banquet Hall ((えん)(かい)()()()()()()()()ホール, Enkai Hōru), also known as the Ceremony Hall or Reception Hall, is an assembly room for social gatherings that lies between the King's and Princes' living quarters.[5][15] The departure ceremony took place here on the first day of the voyage. On the subsequent Sundays, the hall's main function was changed to host dinner parties to which the Princes and dignitaries are invited. Each Prince is asked to enter or leave the hall through a passageway at prescribed times.[3]

The banquet hall is furnished with many dining tables and provides a buffet restaurant for its guests. King Nasubi's throne lies on a raised platform on one end of the hall, while a central stage for announcers and different performers is placed on the other end. The program acts are separated into two halves and played over the intercoms on Tiers 1 and 2.[17][18]

The first banquet commenced on August 15th (Day 8) at 8:00 PM. The main event was Princes Kacho and Fugetsu's glass harp performance. At most, only seven princes have attended, with Princes Tyson, Kacho and Fugetsu being the only ones confirmed.

Jail[]

Beyond's Holding Cell (べヨンド(こう)(そく)(しつ)()()()()()()(), Beyondo Kōsoku-shitsu) is used to house Beyond Netero during the entirety of the voyage in accordance with his contract with the V5, which states that he will stay in a room under 24-hour watch, with chaperones accompanying him on outings, and that his whereabouts will be monitored via an anklet with a tracking device, with any future communications being managed and monitored.[19] The holding cell is very small, only able to include a urinal and a bed for Beyond whose right arm is restrained by a manacle that is bolted into the cell's wall. On the first day of the voyage, there were three Zodiacs watching him, with Kanzai questioning the system. Saccho internally agrees that three aren't needed when Beyond has no motive to escape for now, saying that they will suggest a rotation to Mizaistom so that one of them can support the Royal Army.[3]

A first-class cell was used to detain Camilla after she assaulted Benjamin and killed two of his guards.[20] Other criminals and suspects are taken into custody in standard cells before facing a court-martial.[21]

Supreme Court[]

The Supreme Court ((さい)(こう)(さい)(ばん)(かん)(しつ)()()()(), Saikō Saibankan-shitsu) is part of Kakin's independent judicial branch. It is the highest court on board the Black Whale, having the ultimate judicial authority. Cleapatro resides there as the Supreme Magistrate in charge of conducting trials, deciding what evidence is admissible, and issuing rulings based upon the facts presented.[9]

Princes' Burial Chamber[]

The Princes' Burial Chamber is a large room containing 14 coffins used to hold the deceased bodies of the Princes who participated in the succession contest. A large capsule lies in the center of the room, with the 14 coffins set around it and another 14 slots between each coffin and the capsule. Two pots lie near the capsule's edge, opposing each other.[9] The floor and walls bear a strong resemblance to the inscriptions found at Greed Island's starting point.[22]

It is currently unknown where the chamber is located on the ship, but it is presumably on Tier 1, given its connection to the Princes and the succession contest. Given the fourteen coffins lining up nicely with the fourteen participants of the Succession War, it appears to have a special purpose beyond functioning as a burial chamber.

It is also unclear what happens should the chambers not be fully filled, since there is no direct confirmation that Prince Kacho's body was recovered from the lifeboat that's out at sea.[17]

Lifeboat Launch Site[]

The Lifeboat Launch Site ((きゅう)(めい)(ボート)()()()()()()()(はっ)(しゃ)(じょう)()()()()()()(), Kyūmei-bōto no Hasshajō) can be accessed from an emergency door secured by a keypad lock and guarded by Kakin Royal Army soldiers. It took Keeney and Princes Kacho and Fugetsu two minutes to run there from the banquet hall's passageway. The closed lifeboats are placed in a waterway and can be launched from a nearby control unit. They exit the ship from an outlet hole just above the Black Whale's waterline.[17]

Tier 2[]

Tier 2 bulkhead

The bulkhead separating the second and third tiers

Tier 2 (2(そう), Ni-sō) is at the highest level of the Black Whale's hull and accommodates celebrities and the wealthy. A thick bulkhead is utilized to separate it from the third and lower tiers, and can only be opened in emergencies from the second-tier side. The fatal downside is that it causes Tier 2 to also become a part of the "hunting grounds" for Kakin's succession contest.[5] Currently, there are 600 guards and Royal Army soldiers stationed on this tier.[6]

Theater Venue[]

The Theater Venue (シアター(かい)(じょう)()()()()()()()(), Shiatā Kaijō) is a small auditorium with a large projection screen and several loges. After the departure of the Black Whale 1, a presenter explains the details of the two-month voyage to a small crowd.[3]

Justice Bureau[]

The Justice Bureau (()(ほう)(きょく)()()()()()()(), Shihō-kyoku) is a five-story building and part of Kakin's independent judicial branch. Kaiser described it as the most neutral institution on board the ship.[23] After the incident at the Sunday banquet, Melody, Kacho (actually Kacho's Guardian Spirit Beast), and Fugetsu are being held there for questioning by Kaiser. Melody also deduced that Kaiser was keeping her there to protect her from the dangerous Princes.[24] During the voyage, Steiner and Peuckert from the IPA were temporarily relocated to the Bureau's investigation department.[25]

Kaiser has a small office filled with several full bookcases. The bureau has multiple interrogation rooms and a lavishly furnished VIP Witness Protection Area (VIP(ビップ)(よう)()()()()()()()()(しょう)(にん)()()()()()()()()エリア, Bippuyō no Shōnin Hōgo Eria), which Kaiser describes as the safest place on the ship. The bureau also has at least one room where visitations can happen. They can only last 10 minutes, and all conversations are recorded. A public defender is also present since the exchanges might be used in a court of law. Panels of glass act as a barrier, and each side has a drawer if items need to be given or taken.[23]

Heil-Ly Family Secret Hideout[]

After investigating a trapped doorway in the first-class cabins on Tier 3,[26] Hinrigh and Nobunaga were able to infiltrate the Heil-Ly Family Secret Hideout (エイ=イ(いっ)()()()()()()()()()(かく)()()()()()()()()()しアジト, Ei i Ikka no Kakushi Ajito), which the Heil-Ly Family uses as their main base of operations as well as where they kill and dispose of many of their victims. The processing room (shower room) is large and contains a small shower, bathroom, and three toilets. There is also a disposal room (laundry room) filled with clothes, tools, and pots of boiling water where they dispose of their victims.[4][27] Conversely, Morena's office is neat and clean, acting as the meeting place to discuss important missions with the head of the family.[28] Finally, there is a large communal area with a table and couch where the members spend most of their time.[27]

After utilizing the transmitter that Hinrigh left behind in the hideout and the receiver that he gave them, Nobunaga, Phinks, and Feitan were able to determine that the hideout is located somewhere on Tier 2.[23]

Tier 3[]

Tier 3 (3(そう), San-sō) is in the middle portion of the Black Whale's hull. Like Tiers 4 and 5, it is zoned for general passengers. A thick bulkhead separates it from the upper tiers, and it can only be opened in emergencies from the second-tier side.[5] There appear to be further partitions of its General Passenger Area into at least 5 sections as Areas C and E are mentioned by Cha-R Underboss Ken'i.[8][note 1] Hisoka is first found by Hinrigh in a cineplex on Tier 3.[26]

The tier is arguably one of the least secured on the ship as it has neither the great numbers of soldiers of the upper tiers, nor the Mafia's concern to maintain order, given that Morena, the boss of the Heil-Ly Family, ordered her members to wreak havoc and kill everyone on the ship.[10] On the other hand, the tier is the location of the medical and political wards,[6] and has three clinics, the highest number in the lower tiers.[5]

Passenger Cabins[]

First-Class Cabins ((いっ)(とう)(きゃく)(しつ)()()()()()(), Ittō Kyakushitsu)[26] and Standard Cabins ((いっ)(ぱん)(きゃく)(しつ)()()()()()(), Ippan Kyakushitsu)[6] are both available in the highest tier zoned for general passengers. Near the top of Tier 3, a standard cabin consists of a bed, cupboards, shelves, and a bathroom. The single cabins are aligned in a corridor that connects to a General Passenger Area ((いっ)(ぱん)(じょう)(きゃく)()()()()()()エリア, Ippan Jōkyaku Eria) which acts as an assembly point.[29]

Room 3101 (3101(ごう)(しつ)()()()()()()()(), 3101-gōshitsu) and Room 3131 (3131(ごう)(しつ)()()()()()()()(), 3131-gōshitsu) are first-class cabins owned and used by the Heil-Ly Family to capture and kill unsuspecting passengers in their secret hideout so that they can level up their abilities. The rooms also act as secret passageways for the members to travel to and from the hideout.[26][28][4][27]

Political Ward[]

The Political Ward ((せい)()(とっ)()()()()()()(), Seiji Tokku) is located in the middle portion of the tier. It serves as the main headquarters that contains the different Political and Legal Enforcement Agencies ((せい)()()()()()()()()()(ほう)(りつ)()()()()()()()()()(こう)()(かん)()()()()()(), Seiji/Hōritsu no Shikō Kikan), the Central Police Station, and the Royal Army Office.[6]

One of the law enforcement agencies, the Central Courthouse ((ちゅう)(おう)(さい)(ばん)(しょ)()()()()(), Chūō Saibansho) maintains order on the Black Whale.[5] It is headed by Botobai,[3] who acts as the court's judge. The room is filled with soldiers from the Kakin Royal Army who keep order and lead the defendants to the courtroom, a clerk to keep the records, and what appears to be lay judges.[3]

The Central Police Station ((ちゅう)(おう)(けい)(さつ)()()()()()(), Chūō Keisatsu) is a four-story building headed by Mizaistom.[30] Its dorm provides individual rooms as well as communal bathrooms for the police officers and other members of staff.[6] One of its facilities, the Community Safety Section, serves as an interview room for non-detained visitors.[30]

The Royal Army Office ((こく)(おう)(ぐん)()()()()()()(), Kokuō-gun Shibu) holds meetings between generals of the Kakin Royal Army and is headed by Mizaistom. During meetings, the committee members discuss issues regarding the public safety aboard the ship. Once they have agreed on certain measures, they have the authority to execute most of them unless further procedures are needed such as relaying the information to Prince Benjamin, the head of Kakin's national defense.[6]

Medical Ward[]

The Medical Ward (()()(がく)(とっ)()()()()()(), Ika-gaku Tokku) is a special zone located in the middle of the tier that contains the Central Hospital ((ちゅう)(おう)(びょう)(いん)()()()()()(), Chūō Byōin) and the Research Institute ((そう)(ごう)(けん)(きゅう)(じょ)()()()()(), Sōgōkenkyūjo).[6]

The central hospital accommodates at least one of the three clinics on the tier, the Central Medical Clinic ((ちゅう)(おう)()(りょう)(しつ)()()()()(), Chūō Iryō-shitsu), which is supervised by Cheadle.[3]

Observation Deck[]

The Observation Deck ((てん)(ぼう)()()()()()()()()エリア, Tenbō Eria) is a sightseeing platform located at the front of the Black Whale. It is filled with numerous outdoor lounge chairs, shops, and bars.[6]

Heil-Ly Family Office[]

The Heil-Ly Family Office (エイ=イ(いっ)()()()(しょ)()()()()(), Ei i Ikka Jimusho) is located near the bottom of the tier[6] and acted as a hideout for the family's members before being raided by several soldiers.[28] It has a passageway that connects to Morena's quarters on Tier 1.[13]

Tier 4[]

Tier 4 (4(そう), Yon-sō) is in the middle portion of the Black Whale's hull. Like Tiers 3 and 5, it is zoned for general passengers. Although it appears to be the largest in terms of size, Tier 4 only has one medical clinic.[5]

The tier is controlled by the Xi-Yu Family, which profits from human trafficking and the distribution of goods.[10] It also relies on them to maintain public order since the number of civilians for every guard and Royal Army soldier exceeds 300 in the lower tiers.[6]

Kakin Royal Army Conference Room[]

The Kakin Royal Army Conference Room (カキン(こく)(おう)(ぐん)(かい)()(しつ)()()()(), Kakin Kokuō-gun Kaigishitsu)[3] is responsible for ensuring security on the Black Whale.[5] It is the meeting point for people affiliated with the Royal Army and is currently headed by Mizaistom.[3]

Xi-Yu Family Office[]

The Xi-Yu Family Office (シュウ=ウ(いっ)()()()(しょ)()()()()(), Shu u Ikka Jimusho) is located in the front portion of the ship, within the "teeth" of the Black Whale. It acts as a hideout for the family's members.[6]

Tier 5[]

Tier 5 (5(そう), Go-sō) is located at the bottom of the Black Whale's hull, next to its propeller and completely below the ocean. Like Tiers 3 and 4, it is zoned for general passengers. It is the smallest of the lower tiers and has only one medical clinic with no dedicated doctors.[5]

The tier is controlled by the Cha-R Family, which is in charge of all commodities.[10] It also relies on them to maintain public order since the number of civilians for every guard and Royal Army soldier exceeds 300 in the lower tiers.[6]

Passenger Cabins[]

Standard Cabins ((いっ)(ぱん)(きゃく)(しつ)()()()()()(), Ippan Kyakushitsu) are the only confirmed rooms to be available for the general passengers on the lowest tier.[6]

37564[]

37564 is an assembly point on Tier 5 where Chrollo was first seen on the ship.[11]

Central Dining Hall[]

The Central Dining Hall ((ちゅう)(おう)(しょく)(どう)()()()()()(), Chūō Shokudō) is the only cafeteria on Tier 5. It can only be accessed from one passageway that is controlled by three Buor Family thugs after they bribed the soldiers in charge. A passenger can pay them Jenny Symbol 20115,000, borrow loyalty cards, or follow a payment schedule to gain access. After the thugs were subdued by several members of the Phantom Troupe, it is unknown if they still have authority over the passageway.[9]

Warehouse[]

The Warehouse ((そう)()()()()()()()()(), Sōko) is controlled by the Cha-R Family. It stores various goods, some of which were smuggled in from the black market. Four guards were positioned to watch over the warehouse before they were killed by Luini.[10][29] The Cha-R Family also has one security camera installed at the warehouse's entrance, after all the cargo had been loaded.[6]

Cha-R Family Office[]

The Cha-R Family Office (シャ=ア(いっ)()()()(しょ)()()()()(), Sha a Ikka Jimusho) is located in the middle section of the tier, right next to the ship's propeller.[6] It acts as a hideout for the family's members. A steel door with a smart lock and two security cameras guard the entrance.[29] The office consists of an office, a bedroom, and a monitor room that records surveillance over all the key areas of Tier 5.[6] It also has a passageway that connects to Brocco Li's quarters on Tier 1.[13]

Trivia[]

  • 37564 is a Japanese wordplay, which can be read "mi-na-go-ro-shi" (みなごろし), meaning "massacre" or "kill them all".[11]

Intertextuality and References[]

  • The division of classes on the Black Whale resembles that of the RMS Titanic, a British passenger ship notorious for its sinking in 1912. The classes were separated similarly, with the wealthier passengers being near the top while the poorer were closer to the bottom.[31]
