Plant-based ice cream shop Sweet Izzy set out to recreate the essence of its flagship location in Cape Cod, Mass. by evoking the feeling of a Cape Cod summer at its second location in Denver. The company scooped up MBH Architects for the task.
The 1,300-square-foot shop in Denver’s Cherry Creek neighborhood is anchored by a cedar shake-clad counter reminiscent of the quintessential Cape Cod house. The counter serves as the store’s focal point, where customers can indulge in a myriad of delightful ice cream flavors and toppings.
Drawing inspiration from Cape Cod’s serene coastal palette, pale pink hues adorn the interior, complemented by marble countertops and subtle gold and pink accents. Pink gooseneck lights lend a whimsical touch, illuminating the space with a soft, inviting glow.
Mike Doucette, who co-owns Sweet Izzy with his wife Elizabeth, worked closely with MBH to ensure that the layout and design elements enhance the overall customer journey, from the moment they step through the door to the last bite of ice cream.
The thoughtful design extends to the layout of the space, with the serving counter strategically positioned to allow for a brief engagement period upon entry, fostering a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A clear glass partition showcases an array of tantalizing toppings, encouraging constant interaction between customers and staff.
“Our design intent was to seamlessly blend the Cape Cod style with the vibrancy of urban Denver, creating a space that feels both familiar and inviting,” said Bonnie Russo, Project Architect at MBH Architects in a statement. “We wanted the focus to remain on Sweet Izzy’s delectable offerings, ensuring that every design element complements the overall customer experience.”
