2 years back, when I started Preplaced, I thought that the most difficult thing(s) would be: Building the product & selling it to the customers. But .. As we have grown & experience 100s of ups and downs, I realised I was wrong:) The most difficult thing while building a startup: 👉🏻 Building a TEAM that gets your mission It’s doesn’t just mean hiring good people. It’s more than that. It’s also about helping them grow, develop strong bonds & truly take care of them. As Richard Branson pointed out ⬇ You take care of the people & they take care of the business. Focus on building the right team ✔️ In fact, I believe people-building & culture-building is the main task of the CEO. Rest everything will happen. If the right people with the right intentions come together, business & vision are taken care of. ⮞ Focus on building the right team. ⮞ Everything else can be taken care of later :) P.S. What does almost every successful company have in common? They all struggled at first. Whether it was a struggle creating their first MVP, hiring their first team members, selling their first units, or renewing those first customers they all experienced challenges. Not just a few challenges, but a lot of them. Too often founders see the huge success other companies have achieved and forget about the long road it took to get to that level of success. Before any company can become successful, it needs to first become viable. Only then can you start building a success story. Why is this important? It’s important when considering things like hiring your early team. Many founders focus on hiring people who believe in their long-term vision. While having a team that believes in that vision is a great thing, it is not the most important thing. Your early team needs to understand your long-term vision but be excited about all the hard work it is going to take just to become a viable company. They need to not just be challenge-adverse but to excitedly embrace challenges. The people who get up excited every day to take on the next challenge are going to be your champions in building a company. They are the concrete steps that will one day allow you to tackle that mountain. Side note: If you want to attract this type of talent, be prepared to compensate them fairly. Being a founder is tough. But I’ve found this to be the hardest part: Mastering compartmentalization. Deal fell through?  Take a deep breath. Exude assurance with the next prospect. Employee resigned?  Grit your teeth. Put on a cheery face for your team. Rejected by the 55th investor?  Collect your thoughts. Show confidence at the next call. Without compartmentalization, founders burn out. Many founders need to hear / read this. The job of a founder is very different from the job of a CEO. Companies have stages that need to be respected and acknowledged. If you are a founder that is transitioning to be a CEO, look at yourself in the mirror. —> Do you have what it takes to do the new role? —> Will you enjoy it? —> Are you holding on to the title for personal vanity reasons? My personal experience has thought me a very clear lesson: define what you enjoy and do it over and over again as that is your super power. When I had to fill in a role that I didn’t enjoy, while doing it and doing it as well as I could, achieving results and growing the business, I wasn’t able to make efficient use of my energy and my power. This is very important. Of course you can be the CEO of your own company after having been the founder. Of course you can do well and meet your KPIs. But… …is it really where your energy and super powers are well utilized. Are those tasks enriching you or depleting you slowly day after day? Big questions to ask oneself.
