It’s all about…IMPACT! 🌱 #XPRIZERainforest recently hosted an Impact Day in Manaus, Brazil to discuss the future of the prize and the impact these technologies can make. “All of the teams represented here will be testing the solutions that they’ve been developing. And then, it’s: where do we go from here? How do these solutions get adopted, implemented, and scaled so that they’re not just technologies developed for a competition, but technologies with actual real-world, meaningful applications that the world needs now?” - XPRIZE EVP, Biodiversity + Conservation Peter Houlihan   See more highlights from Impact Day below! 🌱 The finalist teams presented their solutions to attendees, giving more information about their groundbreaking technologies and their plans for the future. We also had several partnerships announced throughout the day. We are incredibly grateful for the support of our amazing partners. 🤝 UNDP: XPRIZE is joining forces with UNDP to get the technologies from the XPRIZE Rainforest competition into the hands of communities around the world who can use them to establish and manage protected areas, enable new bioeconomies, and accelerate other conservation efforts. 🤝 State of Acre and State of Amazonas: Secretary of Environment State of Acre Julie Messias and Secretary of Environment State of Amazonas Eduardo Taveira joined us at Impact Day to sign an LOI with XPRIZE. The partnership will focus on leveraging cutting-edge biodiversity assessment technologies to conduct comprehensive and rapid assessments of biodiversity in the State of Acre and State of Amazonas' rainforests. 🤝 MDIC (Ministry of Development, Industry, and Foreign Trade): MDIC has been a key partner supporting Finals Testing and XPRIZE was thrilled to have Secretary of Green Economy, Decarbonization, and Bioindustry Rodrigo Rollemberg sign an LOI on stage, extending MDIC’s commitment to support our finalist teams scaling their technologies in the Amazon Basin through the prize's Impact Phase. 🤝 One Tree Planted: One Tree Planted will collaborate with XPRIZE and competing teams to advance the use of innovations emerging from the XPRIZE Rainforest to better understand the impact of restoration projects on biodiversity. 🤝 Ponterra: Ponterra will collaborate with XPRIZE to incorporate innovations emerging from XPRIZE Rainforest to measure the biodiversity impacts of Ponterra restoration projects in Panama and Latin America to demonstrate new nature credit models. 🤝 Glocal / G20: Glocal announced that they are partnering with XPRIZE to promote the prize through the Impact Phase and help amplify awareness of the teams and their solutions. The summer heat is rising... trees can help that. 🌡️🌳 In the face of urban heat islands intensified by climate change, low-income communities are hit hardest by scorching heat waves. Boosting tree cover on paved surfaces isn't just about aesthetics—it's a practical way to cool down neighborhoods and cut energy bills. Trees aren't evenly distributed across our cities The good news is, by planting more in underserved areas, we ensure everyone can enjoy cleaner air, cooler streets, and green spaces for all to relax and play. Let's keep planting and caring for trees in our communities to build healthier, more livable cities for everyone. 🏙️

When big companies make impactful strides towards sustainability, we notice. We were inspired to learn that Kimberly-Clark is setting ambitious goals to protect our forests. 🌳 Their commitment? Cut their use of natural forests for paper products by 50% by 2025 — and go completely natural forest-free by 2030. This is an important step towards safeguarding old-growth forests in Canada, Alaska, the Southeastern U.S., Brazil, and Chile — home to amazing biodiversity. Old-growth forests, also known as primary or ancient forests, have developed for a long period of time with minimal disruption. They play an essential planetary role, providing multi-layered habitat and sheltering sensitive species, contributing ecosystem services we rely on like clean air and drinking water, holding a lion’s share of the aboveground carbon stored in trees (carbon stored in living plant tissue), and more. Sadly, they're under threat due to climate change, wildfire, insect infestations, disease, deforestation, and other factors. But that’s not all! Kimberly-Clark plans to source 90% of their fiber sustainably, including by using recycled paper and working with responsibly managed forests. They're even exploring eco-friendly alternatives like eucalyptus and wheat straw. Now is the time to protect these vital ecosystems. 2024 Forest Fire Season Update 🔥 This summer alone, nearly 20,000 wildfires have ravaged over 2 million acres across the United States. A new report shows that "energetically extreme" wildfires—causing widespread environmental and economic damage—have doubled in frequency and intensity over the past two decades. Despite a global decline in fire incidents, the severity of extreme wildfires is increasing. Wildfire smoke poses significant health risks, contributing to nearly 16,000 excess deaths annually in the US. With projected emissions increases, this toll could soar to 28,000 deaths per year by 2050, exacerbating respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
