Just announced by the USDA Forest Service! More than $190 million in grants is now available to help private forest landowners make their forests more resilient to climate change. Private forest lands – which represent over 60% of the forests in the US – work hard every day to support the health and wellbeing of people and wildlife. These grants will help landowners create and restore healthy, climate-resilient forests on their lands while supercharging these forests’ abilities to be a natural climate solution and remove and hold carbon. American Forests applauds the Forest Service for its leadership in crafting this innovative grant opportunity and looks forward to continuing to work with the agency and public, private and Tribal landowners to advance climate-smart forestry practices on the ground. We lead the movement to reforest America, from cities to large, forested landscapes.
About us
Founded in 1875, American Forests is the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the U.S. Its mission is to restore threatened forest ecosystems and inspire people to value and protect urban and wildland forests. In the past 25 years alone, American Forests has planted nearly 50 million trees in more than 1,000 high-impact forest restoration projects. These projects have restored hundreds of thousands of acres of wildlife habitat, protected vital watersheds and sequestered millions of tons of greenhouse gases. American Forests is also one of the nation’s leading advocates for expanding urban tree canopy and green space, and a key funder of urban forest initiatives that have transformed communities across the country. We can't wait for 1t.org US Chapter's next webinar, The Growing Impact of Wildfires, this coming Tuesday! Learn more and register 👇
🌳 Webinar: The Growing Impact of Wildfires 📅 Tuesday, July 30, 1:00 PM ET ✅ Register via zoom: https://lnkd.in/e-qmc4ZP Three Critical Wildfire Impacts You Need to Know About: 1️⃣🌏 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗮'𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 Canada's fires burned ~7.8 million hectares, emitting ~3 billion tons of CO2—25% more than all tropical primary forest loss in 2023. Recovery will take decades to re-absorb this carbon. 2️⃣😶🌫️ 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 A Science Advances study found wildfire smoke likely caused over 52,000 premature deaths in California (2008-2018), with an economic impact exceeding $430 billion. 3️⃣🌊 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 High-severity fires kill trees and damage soil, essential for water absorption. Post-fire, communities face flash flood risks, as seen after the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon fire in Mora County, NM, which damaged homes and farms. 🌳 Join our expert panel for a webinar on wildfires to explore these challenges and learn more about innovative ways to tackle the growing concern.👩🚒 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬: • Patrick Holmes, Senior Policy Advisor for Resilient Forests • Brian Kittler, Chief Program Officer of Resilient Forests, American Forests • Kimberley T. Another MASSIVE #Forests4Climate opportunity from USDA Forest Service courtesy of Inflation Reduction Act funding. This practice-based carbon incentives model has been a personal passion of mine since helping to launch the Forest Climate Working Group in 2007—it just makes sense to pay private landowners to adopt climate-smart forestry practices through government programs. This is a VITAL complement to what we can accomplish through carbon markets, as there are many forest practices that are beneficial for carbon (both increasing sequestration and protecting stored catbon) that for one reason or another (timing of carbon benefit, measurement issues, etc) are not viable or appropriate to pursue as a carbon offset. This broadens the playing field of forest practices and landowners who can engage in climate-positive forestry. That means more acres working full tilt for climate and more learning to benefit the whole field—including what we do with forests in carbon markets. Bravo to USDA for announcing today in Maine, which has already embraced this approach with State programs and has huge opportunities and willing partners to put this approach into action. Thanks also to Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow for her leadership on this IRA provision! American Forests has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities to support the development of a new seed orchard in Oregon through innovative financing! The orchard will grow climate-adapted ponderosa pine and other native trees whose cones will help restore forests burned by severe wildfires in Southern OR and Northern CA. We are thrilled to partner on this effort with USDA Forest Service, Collins Pine Co, Green Diamond Resource Company, Bureau of Land Management, Oregon Department of Forestry, KLAMATH-LAKE FOREST HEALTH PARTNERSHIP. Through this grant, we are developing a novel financing approach to establish the orchard and obtain the investments needed to grow and share seeds with public and private landowners across the region.
