It’s #WorldMangroveDay! Here are some fun facts about these amazing trees that protect our coastline and the aquatic wonders that live among them: 🌱 Mangroves live in hot, muddy, salty conditions in intertidal zones, which would kill most plants. 🌱 There are about 80 species of mangroves! That’s not a typo. 🌱 They are efficient carbon-absorbing machines. 🌱 They filter runoff and other water pollutants which help coral reefs and seagrass thrive. 🌱 More than 30 plants and animals ranging from “Vulnerable” to “Critically Endangered” depend on mangroves. 🌱 They absorb storm water and protect local communities from flooding. 🌱 They protect shorelines from costal erosion. We thank mangroves for their daily work protecting our shorelines and those that live in and out of the water.

Making Chicago greener, one tree at a time with our friends at Openlands, Grow Greater Englewood, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated 💪🌳 Many Chicago communities face challenges due to redlining, disinvestment, and equity issues, resulting in a significant loss of tree canopy. This planting aims to enhance the environmental quality by mitigating the urban heat island effect, improving air quality, and managing stormwater runoff. But this project wouldn't be possible without the numerous volunteers and community members who are invested in their neighborhoods. With their help, many more trees will be distributed and taken care of to ensure this community stays green.

Americans need trees but crave greater access. How do we know this? We conducted our first ever Canopy Report: a wide-ranging study into how America sees trees. What we uncovered was a profound affinity among Americans for trees enriching our lives, our communities, and the planet in so many ways. And while the majority of Americans engage in green activities each year, we found that less than half do so weekly or more. A key finding is that accessibility remains the biggest challenge, as over half of Americans need to drive to the nearest park or green space. The work doesn't stop at merely identifying the problem. Let's take these insights and create impact, who's with us? Read the full Canopy Report at: https://lnkd.in/gpGvnR5j

We believe we're better together, so we created a week to lean into that. Last week, #TeamArborDay traveled near and far to our headquarters in Lincoln, Nebraska for Together Week 2024. For 5 days, we prioritized spending time intentionally engaged with each other, making us better individually and as a whole. We heard from our leaders, spent time with our teams, we had LOTS of fun, and spent time giving back to the community, making for a week we'll never forget. Our people truly make the difference, and last week was a sweet reminder of how lucky we are to be united by our shared values of being a part of something bigger.

It takes that one person in a neighborhood who pushes for improvements. Who advocates for change. Who brings people together. In the Parkwood Estates neighborhood, George Acklin is that person. He has poured so much of himself into his community over the years. This retired minister serves as a school crossing guard, neighborhood association president, and environmental beautification commissioner. As neighborhood planting captain, George assisted neighbors sign up for free trees to plant in their yards and helped plant more by the neighborhood’s entrance. To him, trees create an environment that’s welcoming, that demonstrates the pride of the residents, and that encourages generations to stay and grow roots. Say TREEEEEEESSSSS 📷 Trees never stop giving to us. That’s why we have never stopped working for them. Here's why: 🌤 Climate: trees and forests are the best nature-based solution to climate change, given how much carbon they capture and store 💧 Water: forests act like a sponge, absorbing water from rivers and streams that we eventually drink 🐻 Wildlife: some 80% of land-dwelling species rely on forests to survive

Our partners in 📍Romania are getting their hands dirty and making an impact in one of the most historically polluted cities in its country 💪🌱 The communities Ploiesti West Park are missing trees, leaving the park with a lack of shade during summertime. Not to mention, the community's green infrastructure is seriously underdeveloped. That's why we teamed up with our friends at MetLife and the Children’s Forest Association to increase the much needed tree cover. Volunteers gathered to plant trees that will grow to shade park visitors, provide a buffer from train station noise, filter rainwater, improve soil conditions, and support future green development of the area. This project is yet another example of how powerful partnerships can transform cities across the globe 🌍
