June brought fantastic climate news! 🌏 → The EU's approval of the Nature Restoration Law is a game-changer, aiming to restore 20% of EU land and sea areas by 2030 and fully recover degraded ecosystems by 2050. This bold move will boost biodiversity and safeguard Europe's natural heritage for generations to come. → Additionally, remember our 7th grade science lessons on the ozone layer? Recent studies show promising results: global policies, including bans on harmful chemicals, have accelerated the ozone layer's recovery beyond expectations. This progress highlights the power of collective action in protecting our planet from harmful UV rays. Curious for more uplifting climate news from June? Visit our blog to discover these stories and more. https://lnkd.in/eM5qGBmv Let's celebrate these wins and continue working together to nurture and preserve our planet. 👏 #climatewins #sustainability #goodnews #climate #news

One of the biggest barriers to implementing effective, equitable natural climate solutions at a wide scale is confusion. By defining what constitutes a natural climate solution, we can make strategic, confident investments that move the needle on our climate change and biodiversity targets. A recently published paper, led by The Nature Conservancy and supported by seven other organizations (including USN4C-member Conservation International), outlines five guiding principles: nature-based, sustainable, additional, measurable, equitable. These principles are informed by leading scientific research from around the world. As decision-makers gather at the North American Carbon World #NACW2024 conference this week to learn, collaborate, and network on carbon markets and climate policy, it is essential they consider these five principles. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dJmZQKcM #NaturalClimateSolutions #CarbonMarkets #ClimatePolicy

Is the state of nature, reflective of our climate? Importantly, how do we value it? Today is a landmark day in global environmental policy with the launch of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). It will provide a framework for organisations to report on nature-related risks and opportunities and how they affect their supply chain and ultimately the bottom dollar. Climate and nature are inextricably linked, well demonstrated in the diagram below from UN Environment Programme. ➡️Hotter climates affect our biodiversity, creating more uninhabitable regions and species extinctions. ➡️Land degradation and deforestation means we lose vital carbon sinks, increase greenhouse gas concentration. ➡️Injection of nitrogen through fertilisers can degrade agricultural land, and also the ecosystem services which animals and plants provide. Sadly, it also affects human well-being. The framework is an exciting step, the hard part comes in implementation, the more challenging part is integrating this into a systems approach, benefiting climate and nature. #climate #nature #tnfd #ecosystemservices #systemsthinking

🌎 2024 is a critical year for climate commitments. Three COPs UN Convention to Combat Desertification, UN Biodiversity, and UN Climate Change are set to shape the climate, biodiversity and restoration agendas for years to come. And stakeholders from around the world will gather to pledge on how to realize them. That's why we're shining the spotlight on one central issue. Several significant goals across the 3 conventions hinge on intensive land-based measures. But so far, each convention set targets and collects commitments separately. The result? ❗️Land demands continue to rise to meet climate and environmental pledges, with venture upon venture stacked on top of the same body of land. For instance, the land-based carbon dioxide removal targets committed only under the UN climate convention would require an area 3x the size of the EU. Higher and higher, commitments are piled on top of other pre-existing land demands for agriculture, urbanization and energy. What’s more: much of land committed is already lived on and a source of heritage and livelihoods of millions of people, including Indigenous Peoples and local communities. 📣 That’s why we’re calling for a fundamental shift in how we view and treat land. We want a domino effect of collaboration across local, national and global levels to better plan and implement climate action and environmental projects, such as biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration. The starting point: 📣 let’s ring out the message that we live on one planet, that hosts only one body of land. I’m grateful to the “more than 80 civil society organisations, including Oxfam, Amnesty International, Greenpeace, Global Witness, ClientEarth, and Carbon Market Watch, [who] signed on to a Joint Statement titled, Why carbon offsetting undermines climate targets,” and I'm grateful to Chris Lang for his relentless reporting on how certain climate "solutions" pose novel problems for local communities. Carbon credits are yet another indicator to pile on top of other global climate commitments driving a global rush for land. Not only do carbon offset projects peddle the misleading assumption that vast tracts of land are perpetually available. They also perpetuate a dangerous illusion: that we can continue our extractive, fossil-fuel-dependent way of life if we just allocate enough land to offset the damage. Land – a finite and contested resource – is being stretched beyond its limit. Real solutions lie in systemic change. Not in commodifying our one planet's precious and limited resources for short-sighted – and temporary – offsets. To achieve that change, I think how land is treated and climate solutions proposed require a radical shift in perspective. (Read full statement here https://bitly.cx/IBb5 ) (Views are my own)

Starting today, environmental leaders from 185 countries will gather in Vancouver, Canada for the Seventh Assembly of the Global Environment Facility. Building on recent diplomatic breakthroughs on biodiversity loss, toxic chemicals, and the high seas, the GEF Assembly will be a critical stocktaking for 2030 goals to end pollution and nature loss, combat climate change, and propel inclusive, locally-led conservation.
