"It has been estimated that more than three quarters of mangroves in the world are now threatened, and with them all the aquatic and terrestrial organisms that depend on them..." - UNESCO Director-General On this International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, we acknowledge the crucial role that mangroves play in our tropical and subtropical ecosystems. Found where the ocean meets the land, they protect our coastlines, restore biodiversity in marine ecosystems, store carbon, and keep our beaches beautiful. Our mangrove restoration projects typically occur throughout Asia and Latin America where these trees are native and can thrive, including in Costa Rica, The Philippines, India, Haiti, and Guatemala. Each mangrove planted helps protect riverbanks, improve the water environment, and restore the balance of nature. We need to act now to protect and restore mangrove ecosystems. By working together, we can protect coastal communities, preserve wildlife, and fight climate change! 📝🌳 Project Report: Restoring Alberta's Forests Over 130,000 trees have been planted on private land in #Alberta to revive an area once threatened by agricultural conversion. This initiative aims to recreate a historical forest, providing vital habitat for songbirds, raptors, moose, elk, and bears. As the forest matures, it will become a hub for nesting, foraging, and hunting—essential for our local biodiversity. Beyond wildlife benefits, restoring this forest improves water quality, enhances food security, and enriches recreational opportunities like hiking and birdwatching. By planting near watercourses, we safeguard their long-term health for residents and wildlife alike. These trees also stabilize soil, manage rainfall, and aid climate stability by sequestering carbon. Local ranchers will benefit from improved ecosystem services, while the new forest boosts our economy through activities such as hunting and ecotourism. This initiative has also provided jobs for eight seasonal tree planters, supporting our community and Canada's reforestation goals.

Fire prevention has evolved into a proactive, interdisciplinary approach aimed at reducing the risk of forest fires. Historically, efforts focused on fire suppression, often exacerbating the issue. Today, a modern approach engages foresters, planners, conservationists, and legislators to develop effective strategies. One strategy is prescribed burning: carefully using fire to achieve specific goals, like reducing fuel load in forest understories. This method is crucial alongside sustainable forest management to maintain forest health and resilience against future threats. → Have you ever heard of prescribed burning? 🤔🔥 Let's continue advancing fire prevention efforts to protect our forests and communities. #ForestFires #Forestry #FirePrevention

Great news from #Colombia! 🇨🇴 👏 In 2023, deforestation hit its lowest level in 23 years, with a 36% drop from 1,235 sq km in 2022 to 792 sq km. Over the span of just two years, from 2021 to 2023, Colombia successfully slashed forest loss by an impressive 54%. This exciting news makes us reflect on our work in Choco, Colombia, one of the world's most biodiverse areas, where we're actively reversing the effects of deforestation. Our 2022 project helps sequester 15,000 tons of carbon dioxide and provides a vital habitat for over 2,000 species of plants and animals. Accomplishments like these show how crucial it is for us all to work together to protect our planet's precious ecosystems. 🌱 → Read more about Colombia’s milestone  https://lnkd.in/gr_SKC53

🌳 According to the US Department of Energy, strategically positioned trees can reduce a home’s energy costs by 25%, including air conditioning. While switching to renewable energy is crucial, this simple act also helps reduce the strain on our power grid during heat waves, preventing catastrophic power failures. How does it work? 🌞 Research shows that planting deciduous trees in strategic locations around buildings helps reduce the amount of solar energy absorbed. This is especially effective when these trees shade windows and part of the roof. At a time when extreme heat forces urban dwellers to rely on expensive air conditioning to stay safe, this is more vital than ever. Let’s continue to plant trees and create #sustainable solutions for a greener, more energy-efficient future. Learn more on how urban trees help reduce the urban heat island effect: https://lnkd.in/euttdcNy

Nature's secret to well being? 🧘♀️ Studies have shown that when we’re exposed to nature, even for just a short time, our parasympathetic nervous system gradually takes control, lowering our blood pressure, pulse rate, inflammation, and cortisol levels and elevating our moods. As a result, we can experience increased vigor and decreased depression, anxiety, fatigue, and mental fog. Simply put? Nature is always there for us when we're feeling stressed or fatigued, offering a perfect way to disconnect and rejuvenate! #nature #wellbeing #health

Watersheds “shed” water into rivers, lakes, and oceans, playing a crucial role in transporting water to communities worldwide. 🌍 Through reforestation, we can ensure these landscapes thrive for generations, positively impacting ecosystems and communities. By planting trees, we’re restoring habitats, improving water quality, reducing erosion, and enhancing ecosystem health. 🌱 In 2022, we helped over 1,100 hill tribe members in #Thailand plant 375,000 trees, rejuvenating the Nam Kohk, Hoi Lui, and Mae Na Wong watersheds. Last year, we also restored a major watershed in the #Dominican Republic and #Haiti, stabilizing soil and water tables for millions. Here's to the power of reforestation 👏
