Leading Osteopathic Medical Education
About us
Founded in 1898, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) is the leading voice for the education and training of physicians who practice osteopathic medicine in settings across the medical spectrum — from primary care to the full range of medical specialties. We support our member colleges of osteopathic medicine in their efforts to attract and train individuals who are fueled by a desire to make a difference in our healthcare system by treating the whole person and building a future emphasizing health and wellness for all people. Today, more than 35,000 future physicians — 25 percent of all U.S. medical students — are being educated at one of our 38 accredited colleges of osteopathic medicine, encompassing 62 teaching locations in 35 states. AACOM is an important advocate for public health and healthcare policy in Washington, DC, and state capitals, and promotes medical research, health equity and innovation. AACOM also plays an important role in establishing standards of excellence for medical education through its member colleges, and in graduate medical education through internships, fellowships and residencies at U.S. medical centers, hospitals, clinics and health systems.

I am proud to celebrate the outstanding performance of our osteopathic medical schools in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings! Not only have our schools secured the top 14 positions for graduates practicing in primary care (that's more than 30% of DO degree granting schools), but six have also been recognized in the top 10 for rural health. This remarkable achievement highlights the dedication and excellence of our member colleges to educating future physicians prepared to meet the healthcare needs of our nation. Special congratulations are also in order for the osteopathic medical schools that ranked in the top 20 for graduates practicing in Health Professional Shortage Areas, showcasing their role in addressing critical healthcare gaps. Our colleges provide a medical education experience that prepares students to enter any field of medicine or surgery, but the osteopathic philosophy taught by every COCA accredited school promotes a mindset that values the importance of whole-person care and emphasizes primary care as a vital solution to our nation's healthcare challenges. More than 60% of osteopathic medical schools address rural health in their mission and more than 90% equip students with rural education experiences. While the 2024 USNWR results are wonderful, we are still swimming upstream in a system that doesn't reward graduates for following these paths and continues to promote specialization over primary care. Imagine the impact if incentives were aligned so that the work undertaken by colleges of osteopathic medicine (and many MD schools) to promote rural, underserved and primary care was recognized and rewarded. But for this moment, we want to focus on the positive. Breaking ground in medical education! We are thrilled to announce that we joined forces with Lackawanna College and local healthcare leaders to establish the Northeast Pennsylvania Clinical Education Consortium (NEPCEC). This innovative program is designed to provide osteopathic medical students with high-quality clinical opportunities in the Scranton area. The first cohort of nine students from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine has already begun their rotations, with plans to expand to 20 students next year. Dr. Robert Cain, President and CEO of AACOM, expressed his excitement, stating, "Finding high-quality clinical opportunities is a challenge for every medical school, and here the community has come together to create a complete experience for our students. In turn, our students will help bolster the healthcare network in the region and establish ties that could lead to residencies and professional practices there down the road." Learn more about this groundbreaking initiative and how it’s set to benefit both students and the community. #MedicalEducation #OsteopathicMedicine #HealthcareInnovation #CommunityHealth #MedEd
