Highest standards, better outcomes. We are the largest professional organization of surgeons in the world.
About us
The American College of Surgeons has been dedicated to improving the care of the surgical patient and safeguarding standards of care for more than 110 years. With more than 90,000 members worldwide, 2,500 participating hospitals in our quality programs, and 50 million+ patient records tracked through our surgical registries, healing all with skill and trust remains our #1 focus. Membership opportunities are available for anyone in any stage of their surgical career. To be a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, or FACS, signifies that a surgeon’s education, training, professional competencies, qualifications, and ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation consistent with the high standards established and required by the College. In addition to Fellows in all surgical specialties and in all practice settings, residents, medical students, and surgical team members all have a place within the ACS, the House of Surgery™. Our robust quality improvement and surgical education programs can lead to greater access for patients, fewer complications, lower cost of care, and better outcomes. Our quality accreditation and verification programs, products, guidelines, and tools improve quality in trauma, cancer, breast disease, bariatrics, children's surgery, geriatric surgery, and overall surgical care. A research team led by ACS Fellows Dr. Lesly Dossett and Dr. Daniel Boffa has been awarded R01 funding by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for their study on the effectiveness of the ACS Operative Standards for Cancer Surgery Manuals. The 5-year grant comes in response to the relatively little attention that has been paid to the potential differences in cancer surgery technical quality—a gap meant to be addressed by the Operative Standards manuals. 🎨 For surgeons, practicing art can refine a surgical technique, reduce stress, add outlets for self-expression, and offer opportunities to contribute to the community. In the new issue of the Bulletin, learn about the work of violinmaker Dr. Daniel Lu, quiltmaker Dr. Eileen Bulger, and painter Dr. Steven Snodgrass.

For older adults, there are many considerations necessary to ensure high-quality surgical care and positive outcomes. In fact, patients 65 years and older account for more than 40% of all inpatient operations. ✅ Our new Geriatric Surgery Patient Checklist is here to help older patients, families, and caregivers communicate more effectively with surgical care teams as they navigate the complexities of preparing for surgery. Questions on the checklist help foster more detailed conversations about the benefits and risks of surgery, how to minimize the chances of postoperative delirium, and what patients can expect during recovery. 🔗 Access the checklist and learn more about the GSV Program.

ACS Fellows Dr. Vinayak Rohan and Dr. Satish Nadig led Northwestern Medicine through the first known kidney transplant where the patient was awake during the entire procedure and discharged the next day. This successful awake operation could be a step toward increasing access to transplantation for patients who may be at high-risk for general anesthesia and decreasing hospital length of stay.
