Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded A. Lange & Söhne in 1845 in Glashütte, Germany. A. Lange & Söhne watches are instantly recognizable as a different style in movement construction. The characteristics are closer to classic British watches than Swiss. Three quarter plates with engraved balance cocks are often seen, along with screwed chatons for the jewels.

The new collection of A. Lange & Söhne debuts, featuring the Lange 1. The Lange 1 is well known for its oversized date display.

The fall of the Iron Curtain and the reunification of Germany allowed Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s great-grandson, Walter Lange, to revive A. Lange & Söhne after a 40 year hiatus.

After World War II, the East German state takes control of the company.
