How Citizens Protects You

Security measures to prevent fraud and shield your critical financial information.

Secure logins

Each time you log in to Citizens Online, we run a check on your web browser to help ensure that your transactions will be secure. In addition, you'll be asked to provide a login ID and a password.

We encourage you to change your Online User ID from the User ID created when you were enrolled in Online Banking. After you log in to Online Banking, click on the Service Center tab at the top of the page, and then click on "Change your Online User ID or password." Change your Online User ID to something that is known only to you and is easy for you to remember. Always use secure passwords. A secure password consists of upper- and lowercase letters and numbers.

Auto log off

Our system automatically logs you out after a period of inactivity. It's another way we work to keep your information safe and confidential.

Temporarily disabling your account

We will temporarily disable your account after too many failed attempts to log in. You must contact the bank to regain access to your account. Follow the instructions on the screen to regain access.

Extended Validation Secure Socket Layer (EV SSL) Encryption

At Citizens, your safety and security are our most important priorities. To give you added peace of mind and security when surfing online, we're pleased to offer a high level in protection technology – Extended Validation Secure Socket Layer Certificates (EV SSL). With EV SSL, you can easily verify that you are on the authentic citizensbank.com website and not a fake site created to obtain your personal information. Green means you're good to go. Verifying that you are on the legitimate citizensbank.com website is easy. Just look for the green bar (or some variation of it depending on your browser) in your browser address. The green bar is your signal that our website has passed a sophisticated authentication process and is authentic.

Firewalls

Citizens data systems are protected by firewalls that are set up between our systems and the Internet. Any incoming messages must first pass through our firewall, which allows only certain types of messages to be sent through. This means only legitimate Online Banking messages will be recognized. Any other requests will be rejected before they can reach our systems.

Fraud detection systems

Citizens has systems in place to detect unusual patterns of activity such as changes in your normal banking behavior. Examples of unusual patterns include transactions which are higher than the average on your account, or spending in countries which have been linked to fraud in the past. We may contact you to verify your activity. Click here for more information.

As part of our efforts in safeguarding your account, Citizens may use SMS text messages to contact you about suspicious transactions. This program will be Free to the End User and not disclose your sensitive personal information.

  • Reply STOP to any text message to cancel these fraud alerts at any time.
