Care Tips for Swiss Army Knives

The various tools of a Swiss Army Knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. To maintain Swiss Army Knives, use a 15°–20° angle whetstone for sharpening, or a cooling grinding wheel. Clean by opening and closing in warm water, then apply oil. Avoid dishwashers to prevent damage.

SHARPENING To re-sharpen your knife, use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, always cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures and the resulting damages that may occur. CLEANING If the blades of knife begin to stick together, open and close the blades in warm water several times - this will allow the tools to move easily again. Once dry, apply a drop of Swiss Army Knife Oil between each tool and its spring. Do not put Swiss Army Knives in the dishwasher. HISTORY & HERITAGE In 1884, Master Cutler Karl Elsener opened a cutlery shop in Ibach, Switzerland. There, he and his cutlers’ union produced the finest steel cutlery, finished with the now-famous proprietary edge preferred globally by professionals and home cooks. Karl supplied the Swiss Army with its standard issue Soldier’s Knife and Officer’s Knife. After the death of his mother, and with the advent of stainless steel, Karl changed the name of the company to Victorinox. It is from those humble beginnings that a worldwide icon was born. Today, Victorinox is still owned and operated by the Elsener family, and both the company and family still resides in the small village of Ibach, Switzerland.

With 30 years of outdoor adventures under my belt, from easy fam camps to ultra remote wilderness excursions, this is a must-have to have at your side on the regular. I am not going to tell anyone how to do anything, so this is a must-have option for your to have to pick from when going out on adventures. It has the absolute right mix of tools and it is not a burden to carry around. You don't want to be packing and not have this as an option to choose.

I bought the EvoGrip 18 - red. It's a great knife, but it's bigger than what I wanted. The product dimensions listed are: 3.3 x 0.8 x 0.6 inches, however it's actually 3.3" long, 0.8" wide (at it's widest in the grip) and 1" tall (at it's tallest, where the main blade sticks up). I took the widest and tallest dimensions which is what's important to me. These dimensions are a lot bigger than what they gave. I bought a Victorinox Classic SD for my key chain and it's a fantastic knife, mostly for it's size. I was looking for another knife that had a more utility, but I wanted it to be smaller than what I would call a "classic Swiss army knife". Unfortunately this is just as big as what I'd call a "classic Swiss army knife". From that perspective it's disappointing, but the quality of this knife is excellent. I regret it being bigger than what I wanted, but it's a good quality knife and I don't regret buying it. I like the rubberized grip inlays. It feels better to hold, and I think it gives the knife a better look from the standard "Swiss army" look. One thing I'm not sure about is that the scissors have very (very) small serrations along it's cutting edges. I imagine that this helps with "gripping" whatever it is you're cutting, but it may make them hard (impossible?) to sharpen. I would guess that if you don't sharpen your knifes, the serrations are better, if you plan on doing any sharpening at some point, they may be an issue.

Every man, woman and child should have on of these in their car, house, pocket, purse or belt, its a Swiss Army Knife! These things are always money and I constantly buy them just to have and keep up with Victorinox's technology. They may not of changed the overall foundation over the years but their steady improvements keep making a staple even more so. While some men may want to have a giant rambo knife hanging from their belt, I'll take this any day of a week. I have got more compliments for having this thing handy to use than anything else i've ever owned.

Funny story, my friend while fishing got his pole stuck from a boat that was too close to shore. IT caught the line and starting pulling the line. I was able to get this out and cut the line before it took the rod off as my friend frantically tried to get it out of his tackle box.

You never know when you'll need this, but you'll be glad having it when you do.

I have had several Victorinox knives over the years and all have had excellent quality of construction, materials and design. This one however because of the tools provided is my fav...sadly maybe most of my Wine choices have screw tops now days, so I would rather have the Phillips screw driver on this one (Evo Grip 18) instead of the corkscrew : ). If you do not need the saw then the three layer one without the saw would go in your pocket a little easier...however if you got the time the saw works so well you could probably saw your wooden dining room table in half.
