A spy, agent or informant is a person engaged in espionage, obtaining (or protecting) information that is considered secret or confidential.[1]
Private organizations with similar purpose tend to be named "detective agencies" or "law firms" even though their (unofficial) methods of operations do not differ from state agencies. Sometimes even state officials or members of church inquisitorial offices hire such agencies in cases where discretion is needed.[2][3]
