Animation of the True Night's Edge. Notice its projectile striking 3 times.

The True Night's Edge is a Hardmode sword. It almost has the highest base damage of any Pre-Plantera sword only being beaten by the Chlorophyte Claymore. It is also a stronger version of the Night's Edge, doing more damage and firing a glowing, spinning, green circle projectile called "Night Beam" in the direction of the cursor every .86 seconds on average. Because this ability has a short cooldown, not every swing of the sword launches a Night Beam. The True Night's Edge is one of the ingredients required to craft the Terra Blade.

On the PC version PC, Console version Console, Mobile version Mobile, 3DSNintendo 3DS version, and tModLoader version tModLoader versions, the True Night's Edge is able to autoswing.

As of 1.4.4, the True Night's Edge now fires a spinning purple and green energy blade.

This projectile is unique in that it moves with the player, meaning if the player is falling quickly and swings the sword, the projectile will not get left behind, and will stay in the same position relative to the player, albeit flying away. This can make it difficult to use, especially against bosses, as it forces the player to remain aligned with an enemy in order to use the projectile effectively, which makes dodging while firing sword projectiles at an enemy less viable.

Its best modifier is Legendary.

Notes[]

  • On the PC version PC version, Console version Console version, Mobile version Mobile version, and tModLoader version tModLoader version, the projectile that the blade shoots does 1.5× damage compared to the blade itself.
  • Due to their similar properties and counterpart characteristics, the True Night's Edge can be compared to the True Excalibur:
    • The True Night's Edge does -2.78% / 30% more damage, but is only 77.78% as fast. The Light Beam, the glowing sword projectile fired by the True Excalibur, can go through one block-wide gaps, both horizontally and vertically, while the Night Beam can pass through solid one block-thick walls if standing directly adjacent. It cannot be fired vertically through ceilings or floors.
    • Because it spins, the Night Beam effectively hits more enemies than the Light Beam. However, the Light Beam can be launched more often and moves at a faster speed.
    • The True Excalibur has a 45.31% / 26.88% lower DPS as it may swing faster but has less damage than the True Night's Edge. Note that DPS is merely a rough estimate and far from being a reliable stat for comparison.
    • On Twitter, the developers posted images and gifs of reworks for the True Night's Edge and True Excalibur, removing its beams and making reworks. They have also shown reworks for the Terra Blade. These reworks have been added to these weapons.

Trivia[]

  • The Night Beam seems to resemble a regular Night's Edge colored green, rather than a True Night's Edge.
  • Unlike most projectile swords, the True Night's Edge fires a spinning projectile instead of a straight one.
  • The True Night's Edge resembles the old sprite for the Night's Edge, with duller shading.
  • The True Night's Edge is the item referenced in the foil Terraria badge.
