“When I think of Leadership, the quote “Leadership is Action not position” by Donald H. McGannon is a standout quality that describes Neila F. Wilson. I have known Neila for 11 years and have had the pleasure of working with her and for her, as a volunteer with the National Black MBA Association – Central Florida Chapter. Throughout her time of serving the chapter, Neila has served in several leadership roles, ultimately serving as President. Leading a team of volunteers is not always easy, but Neila would always rise to the occasion. She brings energy, passion, commitment and continues to give of her time and talents to the chapter. She is strategist, an out of the box thinker, a team player and a leader. In providing leadership to a chapter, Neila has been dedicated to driving and delivering economic and educational impact to the members, partners and the community in which she serves. She is an agent of change. Neila sees a problem and does not mind jumping in, to find out how to solve it. An asset to the community, Neila, continues to donate her time with other organizations and identifies ways to help those in need. An advocate for the youth and education, she continues to mentor high school students and being instrumental in shaping their lives. Her leadership with the students in the NBMBAA Leaders of Tomorrow 2017 business case competition resulted in the students winning the competition and being awarded a scholarship in the amount of $15,000 . A hard act to follow, I appreciate Nelia’s continued support as I now serve in her former role as President. Nelia would be an asset to any team. As a team member or a leader, Nelia earns my highest recommendation for any strategic leadership role the role. ”

What are some key performance indicators for effective risk leadership?
I have found that safe, non-punitive, work cultures encourage innovation and risk taking. With leadership that reinforces a message of calculated, strategic risk, people can be encouraged to be thoughtful in taking risks that have greater benefits to the organization and mitigate negative impacts as much as possible. Public recognition can then reinforce this behavior of empowerment, agility and continuous improvement.

What are some alternative ways to find a mentor for your leadership journey?
I have found that leadership coaches really help develop your soft skills, brand and identify those gaps that are keeping you from your career goals. Coaches have the benefit of working with a number or people who have already experienced your challenges and are able to give actionable feedback and tools you can begin using right away. They also act as an accountability partner to check-in on your progress towards your development goals. An initial introduction can be a podcast career coach like Stella Odogwu. From there, value is realized in periodic meetings with your coach to discuss challenges, opportunities and progress. This can seem uncomfortable but remember that growth comes from getting uncomfortable and then getting over it!!
