Today, the Supreme Court of the U.S. ruled in Murthy v. Missouri, a lawsuit arguing that The White House improperly coordinated with social media companies to censor conservative viewpoints under the guise of anti-misinformation campaigns. The Court sided with the Biden administration, finding that the plaintiffs lacked standing in their allegations of government coercion and censorship. Public Knowledge applauds this ruling! The Ticketmaster debacle during Taylor Swift's presale for her Eras tour was what made headlines for the company in 2023, but the Swifties weren't alone in feeling the pain from the process. For years, fans of artists from Bruce Springsteen to Beyoncé have complained about Ticketmaster's ticketing process and fees to no avail — but with the new lawsuit from the U.S. Department of Justice against Live Nation Entertainment, which merged with the company in 2010, a path forward to lower prices for consumers and improved competition in the live entertainment industry alike seems more possible than ever. The release of OpenAI's ChatGPT-40 stirred controversy as users recognized similarities between the chatbot's voice and that of actress Scarlett Johansson's in the movie "Her"—prompting a statement from Johansson herself days later. With hints left by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman himself that the chatbot was meant to evoke Johansson's role along with a revelation that Altman had approached the actress before to voice the chatbot, the scandal has led to a renewed debate about what rights public figures have in their likenesses, voices, and other hallmarks of their identities. But this may not be an open-and-shut case should Johansson decide to sue. The U.S. v. Google trial has been called has been called "the most monumental antitrust case in 20 years" — and the implications on the field of online search could be huge. The U.S. Department of Justice argues that the courts must rule Google’s control over search engine defaults as anticompetitive, and that this control must be dismantled to achieve healthy competition in the search and search advertising space. The question remains: How do we get there? Read the latest from competition expert and Public Knowledge Policy Counsel Elise Phillips at the link below: https://lnkd.in/esSj486d

Today, the U.S. Department of Justice led 30 state and district attorneys general in filing an antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation Entertainment and Ticketmaster for monopolization and threatening competition in the live entertainment industry. The suit follows years of Public Knowledge advocacy urging the Justice Department to rein in Live Nation/Ticketmaster’s anticompetitive conduct, as well as a 2019 investigation that uncovered Live Nation’s abuse of monopoly power to squeeze downstream venues and artists.
