In a landmark decision in US v. Google, the U.S. District Court, District of Columbia found that Google engaged in anticompetitive conduct in the general search and general search text advertising markets. The U.S. Department of Justice previously filed this antitrust suit against Google, accusing the company of monopolizing the search engine & the search advertising markets. This suit followed letters from Public Knowledge letters urging the DOJ to review Google’s conduct for anticompetitive behavior. Public Knowledge is thrilled to see this decision from Judge Mehta! Bulk-billing may seem like a convenient option for many apartment dwellers to save money on multiple services at once — but this isn't always the case. Instead, broadband bulk billing can be a barrier for tenants to subscribe to services that meet their needs and their budget, even preventing some low-income consumers from benefitting from cost-saving programs like Lifeline and the Affordable Connectivity Program. Read the latest from Government Affairs Policy Advocate Nat Purser and Intern Jessica Sneesby on how the ability to opt-out of these agreements can empower consumers. https://lnkd.in/eJ-Z6dxS

Today, the Federal Communications Commission voted to begin implementing the “Martha Wright-Reed Just and Reasonable Communications Act of 2022” to end predatory pricing for calls to and from incarcerated people. This move follows nearly 20 years of advocacy championing the needs of this vulnerable group, and includes a Further Notice seeking comment on additional reforms for incarcerated people's communications services. Public Knowledge applauds the FCC for working to keep incarcerated people and their families connected! Access to high-speed, affordable broadband is a necessity – for education, economic empowerment, civic engagement, telehealth and so much more. For this reason, the Affordable Broadband Campaign (ABC) has been on the frontlines of advocating before Congress and the Federal Communications Commission to fund the Affordable Connectivity Program (#ACP) and restructure the Universal Service Fund to ensure a long-term, sustainable broadband subsidy. Public Knowledge is proud to be a part of the Affordable Broadband Campaign. Visit ABC’s new website at the link below for more information and resources on how the U.S. can find a sustainable way to help low-income families get online and stay online.
But the U.S. is facing a crisis: the two federal programs that provide internet subsidies to low-income families are running out — or are already out — of funding.

Today, the Supreme Court of the U.S. ruled in Murthy v. Missouri, a lawsuit arguing that The White House improperly coordinated with social media companies to censor conservative viewpoints under the guise of anti-misinformation campaigns. The Court sided with the Biden administration, finding that the plaintiffs lacked standing in their allegations of government coercion and censorship. Public Knowledge applauds this ruling! The Ticketmaster debacle during Taylor Swift's presale for her Eras tour was what made headlines for the company in 2023, but the Swifties weren't alone in feeling the pain from the process. For years, fans of artists from Bruce Springsteen to Beyoncé have complained about Ticketmaster's ticketing process and fees to no avail — but with the new lawsuit from the U.S. Department of Justice against Live Nation Entertainment, which merged with the company in 2010, a path forward to lower prices for consumers and improved competition in the live entertainment industry alike seems more possible than ever. The release of OpenAI's ChatGPT-40 stirred controversy as users recognized similarities between the chatbot's voice and that of actress Scarlett Johansson's in the movie "Her"—prompting a statement from Johansson herself days later. With hints left by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman himself that the chatbot was meant to evoke Johansson's role along with a revelation that Altman had approached the actress before to voice the chatbot, the scandal has led to a renewed debate about what rights public figures have in their likenesses, voices, and other hallmarks of their identities. But this may not be an open-and-shut case should Johansson decide to sue.
