"Over the last 30 years, internet access has transitioned from a luxury that few could afford to a necessity that is relied upon by the masses, integral to their well-being and prosperity. Technological hardware has advanced in accordance with Moore’s Law, resulting in smaller, more powerful, and more affordable electronic devices. However, too many are still left out—not because of the costs of a phone, but because of the cost of internet services." The IGF is invaluable in its ability to bring together all stakeholder communities to share their knowledge and expertise to ensure interoperable policy approaches that meet the diverse needs of everyone, everywhere. We need to reinforce the Multistakeholder model and make it the rule, not the exception, in how we address the policy, regulatory and legal space around the Internet, and digital technologies more broadly. While incredible progress has been made in the last 20 years, 2.6 billion people still remain unconnected, and those who have the possibility to connect, often don't, because of affordability, lack of relevant services or skills, cultural and normative impediments. #IGFKyoto2023 https://lnkd.in/gHMpBu7E

🌐 🔗 Bridging the Digital Divide: Advocating for Affordable Internet Access As an organization committed to community resilience and humanitarian efforts, we’ve witnessed the transformative power of connectivity. The recent disruption of the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) has left millions of Americans without low-cost internet access 1. Here’s why we believe urgent action is needed: The ACP’s Impact: The ACP provided essential internet access to over 23 million subscribers, including seniors and vulnerable populations. These individuals now face a digital divide, hindering their ability to connect, learn, and access critical services. 68% of ACP households previously had inconsistent or zero connectivity before enrollment. Imagine the impact on education, healthcare, and job opportunities. 2. Disasters Amplify the Need: With disasters occurring across the country, reliable internet access is crucial for emergency communication, disaster response, and accessing vital resources. Seniors, veterans, and low-income families are disproportionately affected. They rely on affordable internet for telehealth, remote work, and staying informed during crises. 3. Government Responsibility: We urge policymakers not to wait. Adequate access to essential needs should be a priority, especially for our most vulnerable populations. President Biden’s supplemental budget requested $6 billion to fund the ACP through December 2024. Let’s advocate for its reinstatement. 🙌 Let’s come together to bridge the digital gap and ensure no one is left behind. Share this post and raise your voice for affordable internet access! 💻🌐 #DigitalEquity #CommunityConnectivity Note: The ACP officially ended on June 1, 2024, but our commitment to advocating for affordable connectivity continues. 🌟
