NEW: A trustworthy source who has read the Biden Administration’s widely-anticipated AI executive order, which is poised to be released on Monday, told VentureBeat that the EO is “the longest” he could recall seeing, at over 100 pages. Coincidentally, the discussion occurred last night at an AI ❤️ DC event hosted by VentureBeat and Anzu Partners with a rooftop view of the White House, during a week that included several AI-related gatherings in DC, including Wednesday’s second Senate AI Insight Forum. https://lnkd.in/es9G7kQK

States are introducing 50 AI-related bills per week! Nearly all states currently in session are considering AI-related bills, with an astounding 407 total bills across more than 40 states as of Feb. 7! This represents a staggering six-fold increase compared to just one year ago, highlighting the urgency with which states are addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. Deep-fakes have emerged as the #1 concern, with nearly half of the proposed bills targeting this issue. However, the scope of state legislation extends far beyond deepfakes, encompassing issues such as bias, discrimination, and facial recognition technology. The breadth and depth of these bills underscore the complex nature of AI and its far-reaching implications for society. Remarkably, 33 states have introduced election-related AI bills, signaling a growing awareness of the potential impact of AI on the very fabric of our democracy. To reiterate: Nearly half of the 407 AI-related bills this session in state legislatures focus on deepfakes, with 11 states having recently enacted laws prohibiting the use of deepfakes in political advertising. Against this backdrop, Microsoft released vasa1, an AI that animates images into talking figures… making any static single image talk and sing. What can go wrong? What is big tech’s responsibility here? https://lnkd.in/gHVv6cau #AIRevolution #StateLegislation #Deepfakes #FutureOfAI #InnovationNation

On the Hill - from today's Early 202 in the Washington Post Schumer, bipartisan group of senators unveil AI “road map” A bipartisan group of senators are unveiling a “road map” to regulate AI. It’s the first attempt to fund the AI race while also putting in place safeguards. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) has been working with the bipartisan group for nearly a year on the issue, holding monthly AI summits to hear from industry leaders, labor and interest groups about the technology and its impact on society. The 31-page “road map” calls for a $32 billion infusion of federal spending in AI research and development. It also calls congressional committees to develop legislation that would create evaluations for AI harms, protect elections and address risks artificial intelligence poses to sectors such as health care and housing, our colleague Cat Zakrzewski reports. “This will be the broadest and, dare I say, deepest legislative document as it relates to AI that has been produced yet,” said Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.), who served in the “AI Gang” alongside Schumer and Sens. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Cat reports. The Senate Rules Committee will take up three bills today that would require greater transparency of AI-generated content in election-related material.

Upcoming Executive Order on 10/30 is rumored to require algorithmic audits as part of new federal procurement standards for AI systems. If true, this requirement will represent a major shift in the AI vendor market, simply through the sheer size of the federal government as customer. And of course, it will also create new demand for algorithmic auditing services.
