The nation and the party are in a nigh-unprecedented place. But for Vice President Kamala Harris, yet another veteran San Francisco politician in the national firmament, there is a strain of familiarity here. As ever, friends and foes alike are now highlighting her voluminous dossier — but, as ever, Harris has (almost) always succeeded and ascended not because of her record but, in many ways, in spite of it. It’s not necessarily Harris’ record that has won her election after election. It’s her ability to generate excitement and her appeal — she has “it.” And now, it’s far more than her own career that’s relying on it. Read our latest column to see what you can anticipate with Harris' campaign over the next four months. https://lnkd.in/gPvHpP2d

On Sunday July 14, Mission Local took home top honors for “General Excellence” at the California Journalism Awards. “Mission Local’s supervisor election coverage is unrivaled in this competition,” wrote the judges at the California News Publishers Association. This was one of two top honors bestowed upon Mission Local. The other was a first-place finish in the column category for managing editor and columnist Joe Eskenazi. Mission Local also received a second-place award in the breaking news category, for senior editor Joe Rivano Barros’ thorough coverage of the police mass arrest of teens at the July 2023 Dolores Park Hill Bomb. “Mission Local continues to punch above its weight,” said Eskenazi. “We’d like to thank our wonderful staff, all the readers, and the donors to our nonprofit newsroom who literally make this possible. Onward and upward.” Read more at the link below. https://lnkd.in/ghGnebxH

For all of May, Mission Local has $25,000 in matching grants, meaning your donation is doubled if you choose to give this month. Please do so. We are a nonprofit newsroom committed to bringing you the most in-depth reporting on the Mission District and San Francisco. We have been in the neighborhood since 2008, training a cadre of young journalists to cover this city, keeping readers informed, and winning awards in the process. This year, we have been covering the elections and giving San Franciscans what they need to know before casting a vote: We have an elections dashboard with everything you need to know before November. This is election reporting unlike any other you’ll get in this city, and we cannot do any of this critical work without our donors. Please consider joining the hundreds of other San Franciscans who believe in our journalism — and help keep it free — by donating. With 4 days left, we are 91% of the way to our goal. https://lnkd.in/gFsfV-iB
