Thank you to the League of Women Voters of Oakland for selecting The Oaklandside as the recipient of its 2024 Making Democracy Work award. As our Edtor-in-Chief Tasneem Raja said when accepting the award last night, “To be a 4-year-old newsroom being honored by a 100-year-old civic organization, that’s pretty cool.!” #localnews #nonprofitnews #democracy #civicinformation #localelections https://lnkd.in/ggurPaZV

Tell your friends in Richmond!
👋 Hello! We're Richmondside — a nonprofit newsroom for Richmond, California. 📰 With a lot of input from Richmond residents, we’ve been busy crafting our vision for Cityside's next local newsroom. (Yep, we’re a sibling newsroom of Berkeleyside and The Oaklandside! 💛 ) Among the things we’ve heard loud and clear is that Richmonders want more local news that’s unbiased, reliable, reflects their lived experiences, and reports about Richmond’s strengths, not just its problems. We’re launching a free nonprofit news outlet to serve residents with original local reporting and information about Richmond and what makes this city unique. We can’t wait to get started. 👀 Learn more and sign-up for our newsletter at richmondside.org.

Helping people engage with their communities is integral to our mission at Oaklandside so we're thrilled that American Press Institute is supporting us through its Civic Discourse and Community Voices Fund to enhance our “as-told-to” first-person storytelling series, Amplify Oakland. Amplify Oakland helps community members share lived experiences on issues of public interest. The grant will allow Oaklandside to produce a short series of Amplify stories surfacing the experiences and perspectives of a diverse group of Oakland residents. And we'll be partnering with long-time collaborators Oakland Voices and El Tímpano to identify residents and produce the stories. Amplify Oakland is an initiative born out of Oaklandside's core values, and its one that could be replicated in any local newsroom.
