Berengar's Blade is a secondary quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Important: This quest will fail if you haven't completed it by the time you begin the council in The Battle of Kaer Morhen.

Note: Because Vesemir can't be interacted with after you travel to the Isle of Mists, you should talk to him before that, although if you just find the diagram before talking to him, the quest will still complete. However, as Tor'haerne is arguably the best silver sword at its level (27) and you won't have access to a blacksmith to forge it for a long time after that, it's best to do this quest before The Isle of Mists.

Walkthrough[]

To start the quest, find Berengar's notes near the western wall of Kaer Morhen. They're in a chest inside the ruins of a cell-like room, in the middle courtyard and to the west of the grindstone.

After reading them Geralt will decide it's best to consult Vesemir, so do just that. Vesemir will tell Geralt a story on how Berengar tried to craft the sword, but lost the diagram during the fight with a chort he had to retreat from. After that he will tell Geralt where is the cave the fight took place. As Vesemir tells you the best way to reach it is by the river.

Once there the quest will update and you can start exploring the cave. Eventually, you will see the Chort and be forced to fight it when you get close. When it's dead, search the rest of the cave and you will find the diagram inside a bag and the quest completes. (50XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level)

Note: behind some stalagmites in the same cave, you will also find Diagram: Superior Wolven boots. As this is a remote location, don't forget to do that so you don't have to come back later.

Journal entry[]

In one of the now-unused bedrooms of Kaer Morhen Geralt found a note left by Berengar, a witcher who had once been his companion and colleague. The note indicated Berengar had been working on forging an exceptional sword called Tor'haerne. The note was sparing in its details, so Geralt decided to ask Vesemir if he knew something more on the subject.
The elder witcher told Geralt the story of how Berengar had tried to forge a silver sword with extraordinary characteristics. All his attempts, however, went awry and he lost the diagram while trekking downriver to kill a chort.
Geralt finished what Berengar had started: he followed the same route, killed the monster and retrieved the Tor'haerne diagram.

Objectives[]

  • Read Berengar's notes.
  • Talk to Vesemir.
  • Head down the river to the chort's cave.
  • Explore the cave using your Witcher Senses.
  • Kill the chort.
  • Look for a silver sword in the cave using your Witcher Senses. (50XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level)

Notes[]

  • If you already have the Tor'haerne diagram the quest will not start. Talking to Vesemir doesn't give you any options to further progress the quest.
  • If you find the diagram before talking with Vesemir, the quest will be completed and the journal entry will act as if you talked to Vesemir.
  • At least as of Patch 1.32, if you've already talked to Vesemir, while the quest will fail at the start of The Battle of Kaer Morhen council, you will still get the experience for this quest when you finish the planning talks.
  • If you choose to complete this quest after The Isle of Mists, you will have to do most, if not the entire trek to the cave and back on foot. You can't ride Roach at that point in the game, and while it's possible to use another horse found at Kaer Morhen, those tend to be bugged and even if you are able to mount one once, you can't do so again a second time.
  • The chort encountered during this quest isn't a generic one, and is the only of its kind to drop lesser mutagens.

Bugs[]

  • Prior to Patch 4.0, despite the quest taking place only in Kaer Morhen, the quest log shows the "multiple locations" icon.
