Tomb Raider: Apocalypse was an episodic platform game developed by Minds Eye Productions exclusively for Sky Gamestar, Sky's former television games service. Subscribers to Sky Gamestar in England and Ireland could play the game by pressing the red button on their remote control and selecting it while watching a television channel,[3] with each play session costing a small fee.

Gameplay[]

Instead of being a 3D platformer like most games in the series, the game was a 2D platformer featuring similar gameplay to the original Prince of Persia. Players used the television remote to perform various actions, which included running, turning, stepping, crouching, rolling, climbing up and down, shooting, and jumping. Additionally, the red button could be used to reveal hints, while the blue button would bring up Lara's inventory and map.

Each episode featured ten levels (one of which was a training area), as well as various collectibles, traps and enemies. A password system allowed players to start from a particular level, though Savegame Crystals could also be used in order to continue from a specific point.[4]

Storyline[]

Archaeologist-adventurer Lara Croft attempts to recover the Eye of Osiris, an ancient artefact which can communicate between the earth and spirit realm, as well as grant immortality.

Episode 1: The Eye of Osiris[]

Lara traverses through the ancient pyramids of Egypt in order to recover the relic.[5]

Episode 2: The Shadow Falls[]

Episode 3: The Last Midnight[]

Further information: Tomb Raider: The Temple of Anubis

Having been defeated in Switzerland, the remaining members of the evil OTS cult seek revenge against Lara in Egypt, only to disturb the sacred temple of Anubis, who had protected the spirits of the dead, likely as they attempt to find the Sceptre of Anubis.

As Lara's contact has been monitoring the excavation for five days, mercenaries begin to heavily guard the temple. Understanding the risk to her, the contact allows her to enter but advises her to be careful, noting that if she fails to make it out alive, they will refuse to enter as well. They also ask her to see what the cult members are doing.[8]

Trivia[]

  • This is the first platformer to be released on the Sky Gamestar service.
  • Some articles have incorrectly named Episode 3 as "Armageddon".[2]
  • A special version of Episode 1 that would have featured highscores and a single large level, as well as special functionality for the Sky Gamepad, was planned but ultimately never released.[9]
