Godzilla Fest 3: Gigan Attacks (フェス・ゴジラ3 ガイガン来襲,   Fesu Gojira 3 Gigan Raishū?)[1] is a 2022 short film produced for Godzilla Fest 2022. It features Godzilla and Gigan battling each other.[2][3]

Plot[]

The short film opens with a Breaking News report that recaps the previous installment, Godzilla vs. Hedorah (2021 film). Godzilla is seen walking through a city in Japan after his victory over Hedorah. However, during the breaking news report, Gigan suddenly appears in a flash of lightning blasts and fires his laser (revealing the title card). Godzilla then proceeds to battle Gigan and emerges victorious.

Trivia[]

  • This short film confirms that the Godzilla Fest short films do not belong in the Godzilla: Final Wars timeline, since Gigan sports his Showa incarnation’s look instead of his Final Wars look. Gigan is also killed in the Final Wars movie, but is shown to be alive in this short film (although he is killed in the short film too), further reinforcing the Godzilla Fest Continuity’s unrelation to the Final Wars timeline.
    • In the sequel to this short film, Godzilla Fest 4: Operation Jet Jaguar, Jet Jaguar’s backstory deviates from his Showa origins, confirming that the Godzilla Fest short films belong in its own continuity and has no ties to any other Godzilla timeline excluding the looks of the characters (which either resemble their Final Wars appearances or their Showa Era appearances).
  • In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Godzilla vs. Gigan, Toho organized the "Gigan Suit Launch Project" campaign in April 2022 for crowdfund donations to recreate the Gigan suit from 1972. This suit was constructed by Shinichi Wakasa and unveiled in the short film.[2] The short film's credits give special thanks to those who donated to the project.
  • The Godzilla suit used in the film is one of the remaining "FinalGoji" suits from Godzilla: Final Wars.
  • During the events of the battle, Gigan slashes Godzilla on the face, referencing the scene in Godzilla vs. Gigan where Gigan makes Godzilla bleed.
